In an interview with El Confidencial, one of Spain’s leading newspapers, Christophe De Vusser, Bain’s Worldwide Managing Partner, emphasized that despite the rise of AI, the essence of Bain & Company continues to rest on three fundamental pillars: supporting business leaders in making tough decisions, driving organizational transformations, which, he stressed, rely on people and culture rather than algorithms, and building trust in today’s volatile environment. 🇪🇸 Spain, you are hurting your younger generations. 👀 Disclaimer: This is not my usual post, and if you want to avoid reading any controversial opinion you can scroll down 😊 In the last few weeks I have seen a trend growing on Linkedin: “Madrid, the next tech hub in Europe”. While this may hold true (partially), and most of us in the tech sector are enjoying great conditions (salary, benefits…etc) the rest of the country is stalling. Specially, younger generations. Where do I see this? 1️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 in Spain grew by only 2.76% in 30 years, a performance that ranks among the worst in the OECD. This indicates a consistent struggle for Spanish workers to maintain their purchasing power. [El Mundo, 2025] 2️⃣ 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 in key cities is a major challenge. The average rent in Madrid for a one-bedroom apartment is around €1,370 per month, while the average monthly salary is about €2,350. For most people this is +50% of their salary in rental expenses, are you kidding me? [Caixabank Research, 2025] 3️⃣ Would like to 𝐁𝐮𝐲 𝐚 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞? Big no! In 2000, the average home in Spain required around 5.5 years of a full salary to buy. In 2024? Number is up to 9.3 years (bear in mind salaries have only grown by 2.76%). Also, new home? Pay that 10% tax rate on new homes purchase, compared to UK, no tax is paid on properties up to £425,000. 4️⃣ Our politicians have 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. 25-35 years-old workers make on average €1,948 gross per month. In contrast, the pension for a retiree is around €1650 per month. [HousingAnywhere, 2025; INE, 2024] 5️⃣ 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠, companies in Spain pay almost double the OECD average for each worker, the cost of a new job becomes a steep climb, not a welcoming path. 23.3% on avg in Spain, vs 13.1% in the rest of the OCDE. [PwC Tax Summaries, 2025] These 5 points affect directly our younger generations, and comes to show how our politicians have not had a long term vision for the last 30 years.
