I decided on (and ordered) the hardware for my new #nas system. in the end I went with the cheapest and most power efficient solution. A n150 barebone system with support for up to four nvme drives. I will start with two 4tb drives in raid-1 configuration. this will double the capacity of my current (spinning rust) system.

For a while I pondered building a 19" system around a n355 mini itx board. it would have given me more space for future expansions, but I am not sure I really need that much (I don't have a significant movie collection).

Regarding the software I haven't decided yet. But I am leaning towards the most boring simplest diy setup. probably boot alpine Linux from usb, and initialize either a md array or maybe btrfs (if I feel more adventurous). all services on top will be docker containers...

feel free to tell me if I made a terrible mistake 😉

Yesterday we drove through the pouring rain, when we passed a guy who had stripped to his underwear and was soaping up next to his parked caravan.

That guy had the whole "when life gives you lemons" thing figured out.

I was wondering why it was so quiet on the fediverse today. turned out my server's disk was full. of course this happens on my first day of vacation. I managed to delete a gig of log files and am waiting for other stuff to be copied elsewhere so I can free up more. if you encounter weird stuff on my services, check back tomorrow. if it's still weird then please let me know.

I really don't like #telegram but it seems to be the only viable way to implement personal #chatops

There's no other popular messaging service has an easy way to implement bots it seems. discord is just much too much. matrix is more complicated to get into than xmpp ever was. signal refuses to ever implement bots...

I managed to add a couple more days from my childhood diary entries to my blog. You can now follow my adventures of the spring school holidays in 1988.
