🌳 Our forests are failing their climate stress test. How can we make them more resilient? Our latest issue brief brings together findings from several transnational research projects. It highlights the importance of shifting from monocultures to mixed-species forests to improve stability. This transition is often held back by economic trade-offs and governance challenges. The brief calls for targeted financial incentives and harmonised monitoring systems to support adaptive forest management. ➡️ Read the brief: https://lnkd.in/eaEKvCKW Available in 5 languages: English, French, Greek, Portuguese, and German. #BiodivClim #NatureRestoration #NRL

À propos
Biodiversa+ is part of the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. Building bridges between science, policy and practice, Biodiversa+ gathers 83 research programmers, funders, and environmental policy actors from 41 European and associated countries to work on 5 main objectives: 1. Plan and support research and innovation on biodiversity through a shared strategy, annual joint calls for research projects and capacity building activities 2. Set up a network of harmonised schemes to improve monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe 3. Contribute to high-end knowledge for deploying Nature-based Solutions and valuation of biodiversity in the private sector 4. Ensure efficient science-based support for policy-making and implementation in Europe 5. Strengthen the relevance and impact of pan-European research on biodiversity in a global context. Biodiversa+ builds on the work of BiodivERsA, supported by several Framework Programmes of the European Commission since 2005!

🌿 Is our soil ready for climate change? Our new brief on soil biodiversity management reveals that climate-driven shifts, particularly drought, pose significant threats to soil functions. Research from #BiodivClim projects shows that effective management isn’t just about carbon or microbial abundance, but about supporting the right functions in the right contexts. The research underscores the need for region-specific strategies tailored to local conditions, as well as the complex trade-offs between boosting soil biodiversity and maximising yields. ➡️ Read the brief: https://lnkd.in/ed3ZJ6Ma Available in 5 languages: English, French, Greek, Portuguese, and German. #NatureRestoration #EUSoilStrategy

📄 How can biodiversity help Europe adapt to climate change? Biodiversa+ has released three new Issue Briefs from the #BiodivClim programme, offering science-based strategies to strengthen resilience in soils, forests, and landscapes. The briefs highlight: 🔹 Locally adapted Nature-based Solutions, for farming, coasts, and arctic communities. 🔹 The critical role of soil biodiversity in food security and climate mitigation. 🔹 Why forest diversity and smart incentives are key to long-term resilience. Key insights for policymakers, land managers, and researchers working to deliver the EU Green Deal and the Nature Restoration Regulation! ➡️ Explore the series: https://lnkd.in/eqV-tUBg Available in 5 languages: English, French, Greek, Portuguese, and German.

🗓️ Join us on 26 November 2025 (11:00-12:00 CET) to explore how we can strengthen biodiversity monitoring across Europe. Lead author Michelle Silva del Pozo will walk us through the key concepts from the report. ➡️ Register here: https://lnkd.in/eWw_2KCF
How can Europe’s biodiversity monitoring efforts become more connected, coherent, and policy-relevant, while still respecting local diversity? Our latest report offers a practical framework to do just that: 🔹 It maps over 60 monitoring communities, 🔹 Proposes common specifications for interoperability, 🔹 Introduces Thematic Hubs to link efforts across scales. This is a key step toward building an integrated European biodiversity monitoring system, complementing the future European Biodiversity Observation Coordination Centre (EBOCC) by strengthening bottom-up collaboration, governance, and technical alignment. ➡️ Explore the framework: https://lnkd.in/eFn_cBvx #BiodiversityMonitoring #MonitoringCommunities #ThematicHubs #DataInteroperability #EBOCC #CitizenScience

How do we know whether Protected Areas (PAs) are really protecting biodiversity? We reviewed 275 articles and 280 studies worldwide to map how PA effectiveness is being monitored and evaluated. Some takeaways: 🔹 Research has grown rapidly since 2012, but major geographic, temporal, and methodological gaps remain. 🔹 Most studies are short-term and site-specific, limiting broader or long-term understanding. 🔹 Monitoring relies heavily on remote sensing and direct observation; species-level field methods are underused. 🔹 Biodiversity is often measured via land/forest cover; genetic and trait-based metrics are rare. 🔹 Tropical and temperate forests dominate the evidence base; deserts, wetlands, and alpine systems are underrepresented. 🔹 Control–Intervention (CI) designs are common; BACI designs, which offer stronger causal insights, are still limited. 🔹 We know little about the effectiveness of multi-use PAs (IUCN V–VI) compared to strictly protected ones. We hope this map supports researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in identifying evidence gaps, guiding monitoring priorities, and strengthening evaluation frameworks!
