À propos
CODATA, the ICSU Committee on Data for Science and Technology CODATA http://www.codata.org is an interdisciplinary body of ICSU, the International Council for Science and has been at the forefront of data science since 1966. We are a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to strengthen international science for the benefit of society by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use. CODATA is genuinely global and has 23 national members. Our model of collaboration involves interaction between the activities of National Committees and those of CODATA International. Through its relationship with ICSU and the membership of international scientific unions, CODATA can help understand and address the data challenges in a range of scientific disciplines. CODATA sponsors a range of Task Groups addressing issues at the frontiers of data science. Through the Data Science Journal and our biannual conference, we provide a space where scientists from diverse disciplines and data experts can discourse and collaborate.

Steven De Costa has recorded a part of my talk during "AI for Science" session at #IDW2025 on CODATA Semantic Croissant and CDIF, Cross-Domain Interoperability Framework. Artificial Intelligence should enforce and support Scientific Research, not break it! We believe in the DDI-CDI variable cascade supported by ontologies and controlled vocabularies and managed by scientific community, as a foundation to establish a ground truth required for the Responsible AI. The future of the #AI is scientific knowledge graph built on #FAIR data with appropriate provenance tracking, and used as a training set providing scientific evidence, not #LLM models predicting the next possible token.

🌍 Why is open science important? What's it like in Africa and the Global South? Speaking from International Data Week (IDW) 2025, Dr Tshiamo Motshegwa of the African Open Science Platform (AOSP) discusses the critical role of open, well-communicated science in acheiving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for society. At the AOSP, he and his team are advancing open science at national, regional and instituional levels. He also reflects on the state of open science around the world, calling for ecosystems of shared infrastructure. As #IDW2025 comes to a close, Tshiamo, who's on the #IDW2027 organising committee, also has a special message about why you should join the next IDW in South Africa! #SciDataCon #RDAplenary CODATA World Data System Research Data Alliance (RDA)

From Fiona Bradley’s call for equitable access to knowledge, Marcel Garcia de Souza on open research and federated systems, to Bernard Pope’s insights on genomics and data sharing, today’s sessions showcased the power of infrastructure to support open, ethical science. This morning during CODATA’s convened session on #AI for Science, Simon Hodson reflected that AI is infiltrating our everyday lives, and we need to consider how we respond and how our science system responds. Vanessa McBride (International Science Council) shared the vision of the Council - science as a global public good, and discussed their 3 new primers for AI for science. Christine Kirkpatrick (San Diego Supercomputer Center Centre/CODATA) and Tyng-Ruey Chuang (Academia Sinica, Taiwan) shared a CODATA White Paper on the role of AI for science, and how we need to work with AI providers to bring them back to openness. Vyacheslav Tykhonov (CODATA) introduced Semantic Croissant, a knowledge-graph based extension of the CroissantML standard that links datasets with external resources. At the same time, World Data System led engaging debates on repository sustainability and organisations in the data world, moderated by Reyna Broadhurst. We also saw fantastic engagement during the day in panels on metadata, health data, and collaboration across disciplines. And we’ll see you at Eat Street Social tonight! Swipe through today’s highlights 👇 💬 What inspired you today? What an unforgettable evening at Brisbane’s iconic Eat Street Northshore thanks to Frontiers! Our Eat Street Social event was the perfect blend of networking, culinary adventure, and Queensland hospitality. The night began with a scenic river cruise at sunset—watching the city lights come alive as we made our way to Northshore Hamilton. Delegates enjoyed a vibrant festival atmosphere, choosing from a world of cuisines at micro-restaurants along the historic wharf. The open-air setting and live entertainment made for a truly memorable night. A special highlight was the Australian Wildlife Experience, where many of us had the chance to meet native animals up close—an absolute delight for our international guests! Thank you to our wonderful partners and sponsors for making this event possible: Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), CODATA World Data System Research Data Alliance 📸 Share your favourite Eat Street moments and wildlife selfies below!
