#Iraq In the Beiji district of Salah al-Din, specifically in the village of Shams al-Ajaj, vast areas of agricultural land remain contaminated with explosive remnants from the 2013–2014 conflict. These unexploded ordnances have turned over 135,000 square meters of previously fertile farmland into hazardous areas, preventing families from farming and living safely. With the support of our specialized demining teams, HI continues its efforts to clear this land. The importance of this work lies in the fact that each cleared area restores families’ livelihoods — their farms, sources of income, and peace of mind. Despite the progress made, needs in Salah al-Din remain immense, as many villages still face daily risks from unexploded ordnances that claim the lives of innocent people, including children. This life-saving work is made possible thanks to the continuous support of the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), and HI remains committed to making the governorate free from these hazards. But we cannot do it alone — with increased international support and continued awareness efforts, we can build a safe future for all.
