During the BNN - BioNanoNet Annual Forum we enjoyed the great opportunity that the NSC Community Working Group leads for #SSbD and #Training and the coordination team could meet physically in Linz and exchange on future priorities in shaping approaches to implement safe and sustainable innovation in various #Chemicals and #AdvancedMaterials value chains. Today and yesterday, PLANETS SSbD project partners gathered in Utrecht, the Netherlands, for our M12 General Assembly hosted by TNO. We reviewed the progress made during the first year and planned the next steps ahead! A big thank you to TNO (specially to Susan Dekkers and Thomas Hennequin) for welcoming us to this beautiful city and for organizing such an inspiring meeting focused on #SSbD, #surfactants, #flameretardants, and #plasticizers! If you found useful the 1st NSC workshop on SSbD scenarios don't miss this second one on December 5th! Following up from the 1st NSC Community workshop on “SSbD scenarios for advanced and incremental innovations” (23 June 2025), we are now organising a 2nd NSC workshop on December 5th, online, at 13:00-16:00h CET! The 1st workshop laid the basis by the description of a scenario by aspects of novelty, exposure, severity, (environmental) sustainability, (economic) scope and immediacy. The concept of a scenario was integrated by JRC into the revised hashtag #SSbD Framework, where it serves as bridge between the SSbD scoping and a tailored safety and sustainability assessment. It was described as “specific and real set of conditions (scoping analysis elements) that define the context in which the SSbD assessment is carried out.”(Garmendia Aguirre et al. 2025) In this 2nd workshop, we will explore tailoring rules. We aim that rules respect both the SSbD scoping and the economic context (business case), and propose a tailoring that improves the competitiveness of the innovator by tiered and prioritised SSbD. The cases are currently being prepared to enable joint discussion and modification of the tailoring rules in the workshop. Some cases may exemplify “archetypical SSbD scenarios” & their tailored SSbD approaches, serving as blueprint for planning of innovation projects with an appropriate SSbD work package. On Tuesday, October 7th, Martin Himly (Department of Biosciences and Medical Biology - University of Salzburg #PLUS) participated in BNN - BioNanoNet Annual Forum. In the SSbD session, he gave an oral presentation about PLANETS SSbD Case Studies (#Surfactants, #FlameRetardants, #Plasticizers) and how the project is implementing #SSbD in chemicals and materials value chains, highlighting challenges and opportunities. There was strong interest and active questions from the audience! It was great to share the session with experts from related #eufunded projects, such as Milica Velimirovic (VITO, representing the SSbD4CheM project), and Danail Hristozov (from GreenDecision, representing the SUNRISE project) - Always inspiring to see the strong collaboration across the NSC Community! A big thank-you to Clemens Wolf (BNN) for the excellent moderation of the session! It was great to catch up with project partners and meet many familiar and new faces! Networking in person fosters collaboration!

At European Researchers' Night in Graz, Austria, BNN - BioNanoNet introduced audiences young and old(er) to the concept of safety and sustainability of materials, using examples from our case studies in flame retardants and plasticizers. The next generation is full of ideas about making our planet a better place! 🌍 😊

Looking forward to present #SSbD, data #FAIRness in the #AdvancedMaterials and #Chemicals innovation markets today at the #3rdAustrianLifeScienceDay in Linz, Upper Austria.
