Rosa Segovia and Fidelina Burgos are among the few remaining artisans who still carry the ancestral knowledge of the Poncho Para’í de 60 Listas. They learned by observing their mothers and grandmothers, and today they hold in their hands a tradition at risk. Keeping this heritage alive is not easy. There are fewer apprentices each year, the economic return is low, and for a long time access to proper materials was limited. How can a legacy be passed on when hands, time and resources are scarce? A major milestone came in 2023, when the technique was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. This recognition marked a turning point: thanks to joint efforts between institutions and communities, concrete progress is now underway — including the creation of a Safeguarding School, the return to 100% Paraguayan cotton, and the development of a Poncho Interpretation Centre that will become part of the city’s museum. Returning to locally produced cotton means regaining autonomy and ensuring long-term sustainability. The Safeguarding School, in turn, guarantees that this ancestral knowledge will not be lost but passed on to new hands — while the Interpretation Centre will help preserve, document and share this legacy with future generations. Today, on the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, we celebrate this collective commitment. Read more: https://lnkd.in/et2GdvBM
