Artificial Intelligence: the BNP Paribas European Mediterranean IT teams in Motion Last week we were pleased to bring together representatives of the IT teams of BNP Paribas European Mediterranean: BNP Paribas Bank Polska 🇵🇱, TEB 🇹🇷, UKRSIBBANK BNP Paribas Group 🇺🇦, BMCI Groupe BNP Paribas 🇲🇦, BNP Paribas El Djazaïr 🇩🇿, TEB Sh.A. 🇽🇰, and EM Head Office 🇫🇷. The highlights of this seminar were dedicated to Artificial Intelligence with dynamic exchanges, innovative ideas, and inspiring perspectives for the future of our banks. Artificial Intelligence, with all its promises and challenges, has been explored from various angles. We had the chance to listen to experts, share their valuable experiences and perspectives on how AI is transforming the finance industry. We discussed how we can leverage these technologies to improve our projects, processes and client experience. AI ambition is a strategic commitment from the group to promote adoption, fostering cross-value creation to capitalize on the most relevant artificial intelligence experiences. This was an opportunity for me to provide some perspectives: ✅ AI is a true Game Changer ✅ AI is no longer Optional ✅ AI is a real Change A highlight of the seminar was the presentation by Francois BENAROYA, who introduced EM’s strategy and ambitions in the field of AI. His vision and ideas have inspired us and strengthened our commitment to staying at the front of technological innovation. We also had the privilege of having Marc CAMUS participate, who shared the IT ambitions of the BNP Paribas, emphasizing the importance of production quality, cybersecurity, and transformation towards the cloud, while delivering customer-centric solutions. Thomas Courtois (President of Nickel ) gave us the pleasure of coming to speak about the success of Nickel and to share his vision of the contribution of AI in the development of the business. In addition, we also had other speakers : Vincent D. ( EM AI Leader ), Kristof Meganck ( Chief Data Officer of BNP Paribas Fortis ), and Xuan-Son NGUYEN ( CTO AI & Innovation of BNP Paribas ). Each of them brought enriching perspectives on the future of AI and technological innovation. This seminar has strengthened our resolve to explore the infinite possibilities offered by AI. We are in motion to put the acquired knowledge into practice and to see the positive impacts. 🚨 𝘽𝙍𝙀𝘼𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂: Revolut has appointed former Societe Generale CEO Frédéric Oudéa as chairman for its new Western Europe operation, as it ramps up its effort to displace bricks-and-mortar banks across the region. “I had no intention of returning to work for a traditional bank,” Oudea told Bloomberg News in an interview: https://lnkd.in/dHcSeRAx The role is a “good opportunity to take part in a new venture” in a firm that has the technological and financial means to succeed, he added. Oudea ran one of France’s largest bank for 15 years following the 2008 financial crisis, outlasting most other European bank CEOs during a turbulent time for the industry. He also led the expansion of BoursoBank, SocGen’s own online lender which Revolut is directly targeting in its bid to double its French customer base to 10 million by next year. Oudea is the latest high-profile hire Revolut has poached from SocGen, after appointing the former board member Beatrice Cossa-Dumurgier as the new Western Europe Chief Executive Officer. European payment sovereignty is moving forward. After unveiling their cooperation in June, the EuroPA | European Payments Alliance (Bancomat, Bizum, MB WAY, Vipps MobilePay) and EPI Company are pleased to report that the exploratory phase of their partnership, to interconnect their solutions through a central technical hub, based on European standards and infrastructure, is approaching its successful completion. 🎯 The ambition: enabling more than 120 million combined customers across 13 markets in Europe, to send and receive money instantly with friends and family and to make purchases online and in-store, with seamless cross-border reach across Europe, while continuing to use their preferred solutions. It was a pleasure to serve as panelist and session chair at the 2025 SDMX Global Conference in Rome. My main message: if we want official statistics to stay relevant in the AI era, our data must be where people — and machines — look for it. That means collaborating closely with the tech community to make our trustworthy data discoverable and AI-ready. A major step in this direction is building a trusted data commons — a comprehensive source of official statistics that AI models can draw from. The SDMX standard is central in creating such a trusted data commons and connect with AI systems more effectively. #SDMX2025 #AI #OfficialStatistics

New Banque de France blog post on “𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲.” The rapid digitization of payments poses a dual challenge to the sovereignty of the Euro area: external and internal. The 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 stems from our dependence on non-European payment services (the Visa-Mastercard duopoly, ApplePay-type applications, stablecoins linked to the US dollar). This first challenge is easy to understand. The 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 is more difficult to grasp. Today, in the world of legal activities, it makes no difference to me whether I receive a payment in the form of banknotes or a bank transfer. In both cases, “central” currency (issued by the central bank) is transferred: directly via the banknote, or indirectly via the interbank transfer. And I can always convert the money received in my account (commercial money) into banknotes (central money) at a rate of 1 to 1. If my bank does not have enough cash, it can obtain it from the central bank by pledging high-quality assets. In addition, I benefit from deposit insurance up to €100,000. Distributed ledger technology now enables low-cost payments, particularly cross-border payments. This is a great innovation. However, the link with central bank money has been broken: exchange at a rate of 1:1 is not guaranteed by design. There is therefore a risk of monetary fragmentation, as was the case in the United States in the 19th century. Faced with these challenges, the Eurosystem is deploying a two-pronged strategy: on retail payments with the digital euro, and on wholesale payments with the Pontes and Appia projects. The August 2025 "VaR Shock": A Wake-Up Call for European Banking 🏦⚡ The recent turmoil in European sovereign debt markets offers a masterclass in how monetary policy, regulatory frameworks, and market dynamics can create perfect storms even in the world's "safest" markets. What happened? The Bundesbank's surprise rate hike triggered a sharp repricing in German Bunds (German Government Bonds), which cascaded across eurozone sovereign debt with 95% correlation in some core markets. But here's the kicker: it wasn't just the market move that caught banks off-guard it was the regulatory cliff effect. The VaR trap: Banks using historical Value-at-Risk models suddenly found themselves facing spiking capital requirements as the stressed event rolled into their calculation windows. Think of it as a regulatory time bomb with a rolling fuse when extreme events enter (or exit) the VaR window, capital requirements can jump dramatically overnight. Key lessons for risk professionals: Model diversification matters: Pure reliance on backward-looking VaR models creates vulnerability to sudden regulatory capital spikes Liquidity planning is everything: The ECB's warning about potential liquidity crunches proved prescient banks need robust buffers for these scenarios Procyclicality remains the enemy: Regulatory frameworks can amplify market stress through forced deleveraging and asset shedding Despite stress test results showing the sector remains well-capitalized (CET1 ratios holding above 12% even under adverse scenarios), the episode highlights how quickly "business as usual" can become "crisis management." Looking ahead: This isn't just about better risk models it's about building anti-fragile financial systems that don't amplify shocks. Supervisors are already discussing smoothing mechanisms and transitional arrangements for future regulatory implementations. The real question: Are we preparing our clients and institutions for a world where even German Bunds aren't the safe haven they once were?
