From the first call on Vodafone’s network 40 years ago to today’s 5G Standalone (5GSA) infrastructure, we’ve come a long way.   5GSA is a major leap forward. On a dedicated network, built from the ground-up for 5G, it delivers faster speeds, lower latency, and smarter energy use. And it’s not just about better streaming - it’s about enabling real-time innovation.   For businesses, network slicing is a great example of what 5GSA can do. This technology enables organisations to carve out their own private lane on the network, tailored to their specific needs. At Glastonbury, @VodafoneThree used network slicing to connect 102 payment machines across three bars, enabling up to two transactions per minute. This led to seamless payment operations and allowed festival-goers to enjoy more of their favourite artists without having to wait in long queues.   We’re investing in our networks to bring 5GSA to more of our customers across Europe in the months and years ahead. Orange joins the Coalition for Sustainable AI. With over 90 partners (companies, research institutes, associations, governments and international organizations), Orange joins the Coalition for Sustainable AI. Spearheaded by France (@Gouvernement), the @UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the @International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Coalition brings together stakeholders across the AI value chain for dialogue and ambitious collaborative initiatives to make AI beneficial to our environmental goals.   The Coalition was announced at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris during the leaders’ session by @Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary General. For the first time, combining AI and environmental sustainability is at the core of these global discussions.   The Coalition aims to strengthen sustainable AI’s place in the global discussion around AI in the long term, in much the same way AI security or AI ethics are studied.   Artificial Intelligence will develop, but it cannot develop if it is not designed within the framework of planetary limits. That's why at Orange we wanted to join this coalition to tackle the following key challenges:  - rethinking the design of hardware and software technologies to minimize their impact on the environment, - developing a more sober use of AI by using the right specialized and more efficient tool for the right problem, and stopping the “arms race” of ever more massive and energy-consuming models, - set up a method for assessing the environmental impact of AI use, which is still very opaque today - make decision-makers and users alike aware of the impact of AI on sustainability, so as to inform future decisions.
