Bridging the Quantum Divide: Ghana’s Role in the Global Quantum Landscape Although Ghana’s interest in quantum research and education is growing, our efforts remain neither well coordinated nor strategically aligned at the national level. Last week, the ARC-EDS conference at the Accra International Conference Centre hosted a Global Education Event on Quantum Science and Technology. One vital discussion point centered on how quantum-related entrepreneurship and innovation could help tackle youth unemployment in Ghana. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Students Publication. KNUST College of Science (CoS), Department of Physics, KNUST, was proud to participate. The coordinator of the Mathematical and Computational Physics (MCP) Unit, Henry Martin, PhD delivered a talk titled: “The State of Quantum Science & Technology in Ghana: Addressing the Quantum Divide and Promoting Global Inclusion Through the SDGs” 🔍 Key messages from the talk: ✅ Ghana’s growing interest in quantum education and research ✅ The absence of a national QST strategy — and the urgency to act ✅ Proposal for an ACE-QST cluster model to build excellence in quantum science ✅ High-School outreach to spark early interest in physics and frontier technologies ✅ Aligning quantum education with both global SDG priorities, local societal needs, and youth innovation strategies 📽 Watch the full talk: https://lnkd.in/eYtkjtib 📂 Access to the presentation slides will be available via: https://lnkd.in/efzPe6Yz We remain committed to shaping Ghana’s role in the global quantum landscape through education, innovation, and inclusive development. Perimeter Institute Director Visits MCP under PSI Start Satellite Program We were honoured to welcome Dr. Maïté Dupuis –Director of Training, Educational Outreach, and Scientific Programs at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics–to the Mathematical and Computational Physics Unit at Department of Physics, KNUST on July 11th. Her visit, part of the ongoing PSI Start Satellite Program, had three main objectives: engaging directly with students in both the #PSI #Start and #PSI #Bridge Programs gathering feedback, recognizing their commitment, discussing of other program model, discussing of curriculum and strengthening academic partnership between PSI and KNUST. 📚 Highlights of the visit included: 1. A session with students, where they shared experiences and received learning support materials. 2. A donation of quantum outreach kits to support the MCP unit and the department’s high-school outreach initiatives. 3. An interactive presentation on the PSI Program, quantum gravity, and the Perimeter Institute's vision. We're excited about our growing collaboration with PSI and look forward to future engagements through the PSI Start Satellite Program and PSI Bridge Program. *🔬✨ Quantum Science Meets Armed Forces SHTS 🇬🇭* 100 years ago, Old Uaddara Barracks in #Kumasi served as a British military base. Today, it’s a civic space with educational and cultural significance—and the latest stop for our Quantum Science Outreach Program. On July 12, our team from the Mathematical and Computational Physics Unit at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi visited the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School to spark curiosity about quantum science and its real-world applications. This special session featured: 🔹 Dr. Maïté Dupuis from Canada's 🇨🇦 Perimeter Institute, who brought quantum concepts to life in an interactive and high-school-friendly way. 🔹 Thought-provoking Q&A with students on quantum careers and more. 🔹 Department of Physics, KNUST overviews by Dr. Michael Donkor, Dr. Olivia Christos (PhD) (#medical #physics), and Dr. Henry Martin, PhD, who emphasized the role of #mathematical and #computational #physics. 🔹 Interactive computer simulations and discussions on wave-particle duality Mark Paal Henry E. Quarshie A special mention goes to Kudjordji Princess - currently, a physics student at KNUST and an alumna of Armed Forces SHTS. As a beneficiary of our #Physics #Open #Day (POD22) program in 2022, her journey into physics began during an outreach session just like this. Inspired by that moment, she recommended we return to her alma mater. Huge thanks to the Armed Forces SHTS staff, our outreach team, and generous sponsors for making this initiative possible.
