This #BlackHistoryMonth we’re celebrating our diverse global community and colleagues across LSHTM working to advance #GlobalHealth research and tackle the most pressing #PublicHealth challenges. Dawda Samba, EDI manager at Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine highlights some of contributions and achievements of the Unit and the work of African scientists across the region, and why diversity is key to its success, he said: “There has been a deliberate and progressive approach in building a critical mass of African scientists over the years. This is not incidental but an ingrained commitment by the Unit despite its colonial history. “For more than 75 years, the finest health research in the subregion and across the African continent has been produced at the MRCG. From HIV to #Malaria, TB to a range of vaccines, the African continent stands firm and with pride in contributing to health research around the globe.” Discussing the importance of EDI principles at the Unit and the positive impact on research and work with local communities, he said: “At the MRCG, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are not only values written in our EDI policy, but it is also the foundation of how we lead world-class scientific research. “From vaccine trials to community health studies, diversity and inclusivity have been harnessed, which has revolutionised our approach to science and made our research stronger and more relevant.” Sharing his thoughts on Black History Month, he said: "We will be resolute, deliberate, and firm in applying the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion to foster a safe, secure, and respectful environment for all staff and students." In August 2025, to mark World Mosquito Day, we featured some of the scientists and technicians at the MRC Unit Gambia working behind the scenes on vital research to understand and fight mosquito-borne diseases. Harouna Dit Massire Soumare works on malaria transmission and potential control interventions. His career was inspired by his childhood in Mali, where malaria is endemic, he said: “The most important thing I wish the public to understand is the value of prevention, using bed nets and indoor spraying, and taking simple steps like clothing and screening homes to keep mosquitoes out.” Milugo Teresa Koyi, a postdoctoral fellow at LSHTM, grew up in Kenya, where malaria shaped her family’s life. Her research focuses on mosquito genomics, resistance, and population diversity. She said: “This day takes vector biologists out of the lab and into the community. It's a chance to share our progress, reflect on challenges, and raise awareness of diseases like dengue and other arboviruses, which often lack the attention malaria receives.” Read more👉 https://lnkd.in/e-f9kATE Pictured left to right: Dawda Samba, Milugo Teresa Koyi & Harouna Dit Massire Soumare
