While human-in-the-loop is a widely referenced concept in EU projects aiming to bridge the gap between digitalisation and human roles, it is still rarely implemented in a robust and systematic way. To address this challenge and move beyond the rhetorical use of the term, #CreteValley participated in the workshop “Human-in-the-loop digitalisation for Europe’s energy transition” on October 9, organised by ICONS Innovation Strategies – leader of the project’s dissemination and communication activities – under the umbrella of the Smart Energy Cluster during Sustainable Places 2025. Silvestro Ruffolo – Associate Professor, Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences, University of Calabria 💠Silvestro Antonio Ruffolo is an Associate Professor at the University of Calabria. His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of innovative materials for the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on stone substrates. He specializes in nanostructured materials for protective coatings and consolidants, and in the integrated diagnostic analysis of heritage objects through physical, chemical, and mineralogical methods. 💠He has contributed to studies at remarkable sites such as the Trevi Fountain, Herculaneum, Pompeii, the cave churches of Cappadocia, and the underwater archaeological park of Baia. He has co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed papers and has participated in numerous national and international research projects. 💠 In this webinar, he will discuss the biodeterioration and conservation of submerged cultural heritage. Biofouling is one of the most aggressive agents of deterioration affecting underwater stone materials. Understanding and mitigating this process is vital to preserving the integrity and authenticity of submerged artefacts — a challenge that continues to inspire innovation in sustainable antifouling and conservation technologies.
