The Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA), established in 2003, is a non-profit organization based in Athens, Greece, with the aim of contributing to the development of a harmonious relationship between Humankind and Nature for the wellbeing of all. Through research, working with communities, exchanging knowledge and ideas and networking, we inspire people to recognise the value and connection between our natural and cultural heritage, and to work towards a just and sustainable future in the Mediterranean and beyond. Working at the crossroads of nature and culture, MedINA's multidisciplinary team is made up of experts in the fields of ecology, forestry, sustainable development, spatial planning, archaeology, social anthropology and others. MedINA collaborates with diverse partners such as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, the Mediterranean Consortium for Nature and Culture, the Agricultural University of Athens and many others.

💧Η #λειψυδρία και η διαχείριση των υδάτων αποτελούν ένα από τα κρισιμότερα ζητήματα πολιτικής στην Ελλάδα. 📌 Η πρόσφατη ανακοίνωση του Υπουργείου Περιβάλλοντος και Ενέργειας για τα μέτρα διασφάλισης της υδροδότησης της Αττικής αποτελεί ένδειξη ότι η Πολιτεία αναγνωρίζει τη σοβαρότητα του ζητήματος. ⚠️Όμως, τα τεχνικά έργα αποκτούν πραγματική αξία μόνο όταν εντάσσονται σε ένα ολοκληρωμένο, μακροπρόθεσμο πλαίσιο στρατηγικού σχεδιασμού, που συνδυάζει πρόληψη, εξοικονόμηση, προστασία οικοσυστημάτων και συμμετοχική διακυβέρνηση των υδάτων. 🌿 Το GREEN TALENT project ξεκίνησε! ➡️Ένα νέο τετραετές έργο Horizon Europe για την ενίσχυση ικανοτήτων έρευνας και καινοτομίας σε θέματα σχετικά με τη βιοποικιλότητα και το κλίμα. 💪 Το #MedINA, ως ένας από τους 17 εταίρους του, θα επικεντρωθεί στην ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικών εργαλείων και δράσεων ενδυνάμωσης, καθώς και στη διασύνδεση της επιστήμης με την κοινωνία και τους φορείς χάραξης πολιτικής. 🚀 Η εναρκτήρια συνάντηση του GREEN TALENT έθεσε τις βάσεις για συνεργασία και ανταλλαγή γνώσης. 🧩Ειδικοί και ερευνητές με διαφορετικό υπόβαθρο συναντήθηκαν για πρώτη φορά και συζήτησαν τις προκλήσεις που θέτει ο στόχος της πράσινης μετάβασης. Free-flowing rivers, those largely unimpacted by human-made barriers, maintain natural processes and connectivity essential for both freshwater and land biodiversity. They also provide vital services such as flood protection, food, drinking water, recreation, and cultural and spiritual values, continuing to shape and sustain the lives of many local communities. Yet, pressures from infrastructure development, pollution, and resource exploitation continue to rise 💧 At the #IUCNcongress, our session on Free-flowing Rivers brought together inspiring stories from across Europe, showing how science, policy, and community action can align to protect some of the continent’s last wild waters. We thank our speakers who shared leading initiatives and their field experiences, and our colleague Jovana Dragic May for skilful moderation 🎤 🔹 Catherine Sayer, IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Lead, introduced the Swimways Programme, a Trans-European network working to identify and restore migration routes for freshwater fish. 🔹 Eduina Guga, Director of the Vjosa River National Park (Albania), presented the story of Europe’s first wild river park, and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, as of recently. 🔹 Fanourios-Nikolaos Sakellarakis from Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA) highlighted efforts to safeguard the Aoos River in Greece, the headwaters of the same cross-border river ecosystem. 🔹 Milica Miskovic, IUCN ECARO, spoke about the Save Our Species Sturgeon Initiative, supporting projects in Romania and Georgia for one of Europe’s most endangered migratory fish groups, sturgeons. Together, these efforts delivered a powerful call to action to multiply and support river protection initiatives, and to work across borders to keep our rivers free-flowing, resilient, and alive.
