I thoroughly enjoyed moderating the panel on the Future of Crypto-Economics at the Nanyang Blockchain Conference organized by NTU CCTF In 2025, we’ve witnessed a global shift in crypto regulation, with notable developments such as the GENIUS Act in the U.S., Hong Kong’s new stablecoin licensing regime, and Singapore’s maturing frameworks. The crypto-economy has transcended its fringe status and is now becoming a regulated and institutionalized part of the financial system. I was eager to understand the perspectives of our panel members on this transformation and its potential impact on the industry and academia. Here are some key takeaways from the panel: - There will be a clash between traditional finance and the decentralized finance (DeFi) community. DeFi users will need to adapt to the evolving regulatory landscape, while traditional finance institutions will need to embrace a more inclusive mindset. - More funds will flow into the crypto industry, with a significant portion likely to be allocated to regulated projects. However, smaller, innovative projects can also benefit from this influx of capital. - Academic research in this field needs to become truly interdisciplinary to effectively navigate the rapidly changing landscape. Single-discipline research is no longer sufficient to address the complexities of the emerging sector. - Further research is essential to fully comprehend the risks and challenges associated with the crypto industry. This research will be crucial in ensuring economic stability as we move forward.
