🌏 I had an honour to address the delegates from the #BaliProcess member states and partners at the Crisis Preparedness Forum that the Regional Support Office of the Bali Process organized in Bangkok, representing IOM Asia Pacific. #Asia and the #Pacific is the world’s most #disaster-prone region, facing unprecedented challenges related to human #mobility which have been influenced by global 'megatrends' ranged from #climate change and natural hazards, to conflict, geo-politics, #demographic shifts, technological transformation, urbanization, and widening inequalities. Key take-aways from my remarks: 💡 In 2024 alone, Asia-Pacific saw 24 million internal #displacements due to natural hazards — an 88% increase from the previous year. 💡 1 in 7 conflict-displaced persons worldwide, originates from Asia–Pacific. 💡 These movements often intersect with irregular migration routes, which increase vulnerability to trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, and other transnational crimes including forced criminality in online scamming centers. 💡 We must shift from reactive response to proactive #foresight and preparedness — using data, predictive analytics, and AI to anticipate and prepare for crises. 💡 #RouteBasedApproach, which IOM is developing with UNHCR, offers an integrated framework for preparedness, protection, and solutions across borders, from countries of origin, to transit, and destination. 💡 Partnerships and #inclusive, people-centered policies are key — no one should be left behind #LNOB. Let’s embrace migration as a reality and opportunity, investing in #resilience, regular migration #pathways, and coordinated action. Together, we can ensure that mobility in Asia-Pacific is safe, orderly, regular, and beneficial for all. #GCM Thank you #Australia and #Indonesia, the Co-Managers of the Bali Process Regional Support Office, and all partners and participants for your commitment and collaboration!🙏 DEPARTMENT OF HOME AFFAIRS AUSTRALIA Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Australian Ambassador to Counter Modern Slavery, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking H.E.
