What an incredible Singapore Grand Prix spent hosting some of our ASEAN customers at the Marina Bay Street Circuit for an unforgettable F1 experience last weekend.    A highlight was the fireside chat with F1 legend Damon Hill, who shared fascinating insights from his championship-winning career and his perspective on how technology has revolutionized the sport since his racing days. Beyond the excitement of the race itself, we had meaningful conversations with F1 Analyst Ruth Buscombe and Sam Power about how AWS is powering F1 Insights, delivering real-time race track analysis with generative AI that giving teams unprecedented strategic insights and transforms how fans experience the sport.  Adrian De Luca also shared about the technical work that AWS does with Formula 1 & Scuderia Ferrari The parallels between F1's data-driven approach and the transformation journeys of organizations across ASEAN created fascinating discussions. The same AWS technologies helping teams make split-second decisions on the track are enabling businesses throughout our region to innovate with speed and precision. Huge thanks to all who joined us. It was an honour to share about the biggest shift in human history: AI at SMU School of Computing and Information Systems Industry Day. At Google, we've viewed AI since 2018 as not just a technological advancement; it's a profound enabler that can help us tackle humanity’s most significant challenges. I shared how AI is already making a tangible difference across three critical areas: 🩺 Healthcare: From empowering doctors to detect diseases earlier to accelerating drug discovery with tools like AlphaFold, AI is shifting us from treatment to prevention and saving lives. 🌀 Climate Change: AI gives us the most precious resource in a crisis—time. Our AI-powered tools provide earlier, more accurate forecasts for floods and hurricanes, helping communities prepare and respond more effectively. 🎓Education: We’re making education more personal and accessible. AI helps students get one-on-one help and empowers teachers to create personalised learning plans, freeing them to focus on mentoring and inspiring. This vision can only be realised through a shared commitment to building robust infrastructure, investing in human capital through skilling programs, and shaping forward-thinking policies. The real value for all of us is this: AI isn't just about building new products. It’s also about empowering people to solve our greatest challenges and level the playing field for many of us. The potential is immense, and it’s a future that we can all build together. Glad to also catch up with Sun Sun Lim, Adeline Tung, Xinxing Xu and Feida Zhu.

I am excited about these announcements from Google Cloud last week because they open up a host of new possibilities for our enterprises and public service. On Aug 28, Google Cloud said it would bring its most powerful #Gemini models to Singapore. This means that organisations will no longer have to send data to a large language model based overseas for training or queries. Instead, the model will be built and located here, allowing organisations holding sensitive data such as economic, health and defence records that cannot be exported outside of Singapore, to develop and train AI agents. The announcements include an offering that lets the models reside on-premise. So, organisations could train and use the model with added security and low latency, even when they are not connected to the Internet. The news have focused on the public sector potential but enterprises should also take note. Private hospitals, for example, could do so much more to unlock AI's potential on confidential patient records. McDonalds has signed on to adopt the cloud provider's #edgeAI solutions for its chain of restaurants worldwide. It would be interesting to see if, and how, fast and powerful AI will deliver the fast-food giant a bigger bite of the burger. There were other news in the suite of announcements that should interest businesses, including the addition of eight consultancy partners in the #GoogleCloudTakeoff programme, and the introduction of new capabilities like Vids that will help businesses produce creative content at lower costs and fewer hours. WAWCD AI now has 15,326 users across Malaysia and Indonesia combined. To understand this market better, I recently traveled there to see firsthand how businesses operate. Here’s what I learned: 1. Language & Culture: Malaysia is incredibly diverse. 2. In major cities, English is widely understood, but in the countryside, Malay is the primary language. 3. Global Presence: You’ll meet people from many countries—not as international as Dubai, but still a big flow of visitors. 4. Co-working Spaces: Affordable spaces attract freelancers and founders from across the globe, making it a hub for digital talent. 5. Communities: There’s a strong presence of Chinese and South Indian communities shaping the local business ecosystem. 6. Commerce: Malls and plazas are packed with both small and large shops—all of them actively using WhatsApp to market and engage with customers. 7. Government Usage: Even government services, from airports to public facilities, rely on WhatsApp for operations and communication. 8. Tourism: With tourism as a major industry, businesses are finding creative ways to connect with international visitors. This trip helped me see which segments, languages, and business types we should focus on for WAWCD’s marketing in Southeast Asia. The region is vibrant, growing fast, and shows just how central WhatsApp is in daily life—from small shops to government operations.
