About us
The Shackleton Experience, located in the heart of Athy, Co. Kildare, is the only institution in the world dedicated to the extraordinary life and achievements of Ernest H. Shackleton, the legendary polar explorer who was born in Kilkea, Co. Kildare in 1874. As one of the most revered figures in exploration history, Shackleton’s story is one of courage, leadership, and unbreakable human endurance. This world-class visitor attraction follows Shackleton’s epic journey from his Kildare roots to the vast Polar ice caps. Through detailed exhibitions, it brings to life the three Antarctic expeditions he led, including the legendary Endurance Expedition (1914–1917) where he managed to bring his crew home safely without the loss of a single life. Visitors can explore high-tech interactive displays, original artefacts, and deeply immersive experiences, including: • The actual cabin where Shackleton died on the ship Quest during his final expedition • A biscuit tin and tobacco tin rescued from the shipwrecked Endurance • The sledge and harness used on the Nimrod Expedition • Detailed replica models of the Endurance and Quest ships along with the James Caird lifeboat that rescued the crew on Endurance • A 1920s-style cinema showing archival footage of Shackleton’s expeditions • A simulation experience recreating the Endurance escape with immersive sound and weather effects The Shackleton Experience also explores the polar regions today and the impact of climate change on Antarctica and beyond. Additionally, it is home to the internationally recognised Shackleton Autumn School, an annual gathering of polar experts and enthusiasts from all around the world. With a dedicated research studio for scholars and The Athy Story exhibition detailing the town’s rich local history, the Shackleton Experience has something for people of all ages and is a unique blend of culture, heroism, and heritage.

Excitement is building as we count down to the opening of Shackleton Experience Athy on 11th Oct. This will be the world’s only institution dedicated to the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. On Wednesday 1st Oct, “Resilience” was the theme at the 6th Annual ITIC Conference, featuring a stellar line-up of guest speakers. The theme tied in perfectly with Shackleton’s legacy, as he is renowned for his resilience and leadership, particularly when the crew of the Endurance faced the most unimaginable challenges and uncertainty while the ship was trapped in pack ice and eventually sank in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Given the strong connection to "Resilience" theme It was only fitting to offer all #ITICConf25 delegates a complimentary visit when the experience opens. Shackleton maintained morale, made tough decisions and inspired unwavering loyalty. His story, over a 100 years later, continues to inspire leaders and adventurers as a powerful testament to courage, resilience, perseverance, compassionate leadership, remaining steadfast and above all, maintaining HOPE in the face of adversity and uncertain times.
