ProVerum, the Irish medtech company founded by Ríona Ní Ghriallais and Dr Conor Harkin, has raised $80 million (€68 millon) in investment as it readies for commercialisation of its ground-breaking ProVee device. Today’s announcement of two new veterinary schools and the approval of their capital programme at South East Technological University and Atlantic Technological University marks a truly historic and long awaited moment for veterinary education in Ireland. As a former Minister for Further and Higher Education, I worked tirelessly with the Department and stakeholders to secure new vet schools for Ireland, something our farming communities and agri-food sector have been calling for for very long. These new schools will expand opportunities for young people to pursue a career in veterinary medicine here at home and strengthen the vital pipeline of skilled professionals needed to support animal health, farm productivity, food security, and public health. This is about delivering for farmers, for students, and for regional Ireland. It is about ensuring that the next generation of vets can be trained closer to home, while also supporting the world-class reputation of our agri-food sector. Grateful to Minister Martin Heydon and Minister James Lawless for their hard work and for bringing us here, and to Dr Orla Flynn (ATU), Professor Veronica Campbell (SETU), and Dr Dr Alan Wall ACMA CGMA (HEA) for driving this vision forward. These 80 new student places from 2026 will be transformational and I look forward to seeing the impact this will have for our communities, economy, and country in the years ahead.

This exciting new initiative will see participants of all ages and sporting backgrounds test their kicking skills in a series of events taking place across Ireland. Whether you're a seasoned Gaelic footballer, a rugby enthusiast, or just want to challenge yourself, this is your chance to be crowned Ireland’s Kicking King. The tour will travel to multiple counties across the island of Ireland including Dublin, Cork, Kilkenny, Limerick, Mayo, Armagh, and more. Finalists from each location will compete in the national final to determine who truly has the most accurate and powerful boot in Ireland. Winners will receive tickets to the Pittsburgh Steelers v Minnesota Vikings game in Croke Park. Tadhg Leader, founder of Leader Kicking and a former Connacht rugby player who transitioned to American football, emphasised the growing opportunity for Irish talent abroad: “Ireland’s Kicking King in Partnership with UPMC isn’t just a competition – it’s a platform. We’ve already placed Irish kickers with the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints, with U.S. college teams and interested parties on the other side of the Atlantic are watching what’s happening here very closely.
