Scholarship: The Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership PhD Scholarship, co-funded by Intel Labs Europe.
Abstract: The ubiquity of mobile devices, tablets, wearables and other smart devices, with ever-more capable embedded sensors, has accelerated the use of mobile sensing applications. These
applications harness the processed sensor data to offer a more context-aware and
personalized user-experience. However, the resource limitation of mobile devices creates a significant bottleneck for the realization of such applications.
This research utilizes the scalability and processing capabilities of Mobile Cloud Computing to present an intelligent collaborative framework that readily provides efficient collection of the sensed data, with added benefit of conserving the energy of the mobile devices and meeting the performance constraints of applications. -

Optimizing the Placement of Data Collection Services on Vehicle Clusters
2018 IEEE 29th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC)
Vehicles are an important source of data, with embedded sensors including built-in cameras. Their data can be processed close to where it was generated, using computation and network resources on collaborating vehicles. Processing at the network edge helps to reduce end-to-end service latencies. However, such mobile virtual resource pools require effective management, especially if those resources are to be leased to third-party service providers. We address the problem of service placement on moving, connected, vehicle nodes (V2V) supported by roadside infrastructure (V2I). We formulate a distributed service model and optimize the placement of services, subject to constraints related to node resource capacity, link capacity, distributed application deployment (full deployment, anti-collocation and adjacency constraint) and vehicle mobility.

The REliable CApacity Provisioning and enhanced remediation for distributed cloud applications (RECAP) project aims to advance cloud and edge computing technology, to develop mechanisms for reliable capacity provisioning, and to make application placement, infrastructure management, and capacity provisioning autonomous, predictable and optimized. This paper presents the RECAP vision for an integrated edge-cloud architecture, discusses the scientific foundation of the project, and outlines plans for toolsets for continuous data collection, application performance modeling, application and component auto-scaling and remediation, and deployment optimization. The paper also presents four use cases from complementing fields that will be used to showcase the advancements of RECAP.
