This week, Dmitry Bakanov, a leading figure in the Russian space sector, unveiled innovative space technologies designed to optimize the road industry. Bakanov’s presentation highlighted how space-derived solutions could enhance road construction and maintenance, underscoring the expanding practical applications of space technology on Earth. Preparations are intensifying for the upcoming Soyuz MS-28 mission, scheduled for November. Rigorous testing of the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft is currently underway to ensure its reliability and safety before the launch. These tests cover all critical systems, reflecting Roscosmos’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards for crewed space flights. Meanwhile, the crews designated for the ISS-74 mission — both the main and backup teams — have been officially declared fit for spaceflight. This certification comes after comprehensive medical and physical evaluations, confirming their readiness to undertake the mission aboard the International Space Station. In another technical achievement, new equipment designed for refueling spacecraft was successfully tested at the Vostochny Cosmodrome. This development is expected to enhance the efficiency and safety of in-orbit refueling operations, a key capability for future long-duration missions. Adding a unique highlight to this week’s news, cosmonaut Oleg Platonov captured extraordinary footage of comet C/2025 A6, also known as comet Lemmon, from aboard the ISS. The visuals provide unprecedented close-up views of the comet as it travels through space, offering valuable scientific insights and stunning imagery that has captivated both experts and the public. These developments mark a productive period for Roscosmos, underscoring its focus on technological innovation, crew preparedness, and scientific exploration as it advances Russia’s presence in space.

How "Out of the Box Aerospace" is Revolutionizing Education for the Final Frontier – by Frederic Eger - Photo: AI Generated - https://shorturl.at/F9EEg An innovative Israeli NGO is preparing the next generation for lunar colonies and Mars missions while breaking down earthly barriers through aerospace education. Out of the Box Aerospace, led by founder-CEO Vered Cohen-Barzilay and supported by a dedicated team of experts including Shmuel Barzilay, Dr. Jacob Cohen, Reut Sorek Abramovich, PhD, Dana Grinberg, Dr. Roy Yaniv, PhD, Chiara Chiesa, Dr. Ayelet Weizman, Vanessa Zemmourt, is training hundreds of students weekly across nine countries to prepare them for humanity's multi-planetary future. The organization has identified three critical bridges that must be built for successful space expansion. Bridge One: From Theory to Reality. The organization addresses the disconnect between traditional aerospace education and industry needs. "We aim to fill the gap between the lack of adequacy of the educational system and the need of the aerospace industry," Vered Susanne Cohen-Barzilay states. The program includes partnerships with Arizona University and collaborations with El Al and United Airlines. Students participate in competitions counting for 30% of their final marks, recognized by Israel's Ministry of Education. Vanessa Zemmourt, European Advisor and Judge at the 2025 competition in Prague, is expanding this model: "We're coordinating with Belgium and EU authorities to certify the educational degree delivered after the 9-month program." Bridge Two: Preparing for Tomorrow's Colonies. - With lunar outposts expected within five years and Mars colonies within fifteen, education must be reimagined. "The current generation must learn how to live on the Moon, live on Mars," Cohen-Barzilay emphasizes, noting that "AI is contributing to an increase in incompetence and absence of knowledge." The solution involves teaching critical AI usage: "We must prepare teenagers and young adults to use AI properly, understanding that an AI is not a godly truth." Bridge Three: Uniting Humanity The organization actively recruits diverse students from Israel, India, Portugal, Nigeria, Czechia, and Turkey. "We embrace everyone, all nationalities and religions," Cohen-Barzilay states, integrating the concept of Tikkun Olam—repairing the world—into the curriculum. Vanessa Zemmourt emphasizes: "Hate cannot be an option and will only lead Humanity to self-destruction. Radicals and extremists cannot have any place in tomorrow's space industry." As the space economy approaches $1 trillion this decade, Out of the Box Aerospace and its leading experts are addressing growing demand while tackling humanity's persistent challenges. By bridging education and industry, preparing students for interplanetary life, and fostering international cooperation, the team demonstrates that the journey to the stars begins with reimagining how we prepare our children for tomorrow.

Cosmonauts Install New Equipment During Extended Spacewalk Mission - by Frederic Eger - On October 16, Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Alexei Zubritsky successfully completed a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), marking the first extravehicular activity (EVA) of 2025 for the Russian segment. Their mission, initially scheduled for 5 hours and 38 minutes, extended to six hours and eleven minutes as they carried out a series of critical tasks in the vacuum of space. The spacewalk commenced roughly 30 minutes behind schedule with the cosmonauts exiting the Poisk module to begin their work on the station’s exterior. The primary objective was to install new scientific equipment, specifically experimental systems for growing ultra-pure semiconductor crystals, part of the Ekran-M initiative. This advanced experiment, developed by the A.V. Rzhanov Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, takes advantage of microgravity and space vacuum conditions to produce high-purity gallium arsenide films, materials key to improving solar cell technologies. In addition to the installation task, Ryzhikov and Zubritsky dismantled and jettisoned a high-resolution camera previously mounted on the Zvezda module, cleaned its porthole illuminator, and retrieved a detachable container from the Poisk module. These maintenance activities were supported by the European Robotic Arm, operated from inside the station by cosmonaut Oleg Platonov. Notably, this EVA featured Russia’s latest Orlan-MKS space suits, equipped with two adjustable-length safety tethers designed to enhance cosmonaut flexibility and safety. This innovation marks a significant advancement in extravehicular operations for the Russian segment. The successful completion of this spacewalk not only furthers the scientific research conducted aboard the ISS but also signifies ongoing progress in orbital manufacturing possibilities, potentially enabling future mini-factories for photovoltaic element production directly in space. Looking ahead, Roscosmos announced plans for Ryzhikov and Zubritsky to conduct another spacewalk within the next two weeks to continue vital maintenance and scientific activities outside the station. As the world watched every moment of their six-hour journey compressed into a breathtaking minute-long highlight video, the accomplishment of Ryzhikov and Zubritsky serves as a testament to human ingenuity and the quest to expand humanity’s presence beyond Earth.
