Here’s an audience question from “Are Chargebacks Still the Black Sheep of Payments, or Are They Finally Evolving?” answered by Barbara Redaelli, Fraud & Dispute Strategy Manager at lastminute.com. 💬 Q: How long after a purchase can a chargeback happen? A: In travel, it can absolutely happen. Think of flights booked a year in advance: the actual service may not take place until much later. For fraud-related chargebacks, the clock starts from the transaction date. But for service-related chargebacks, it starts from the service date. Merchants were especially interested in how to ensure issuers actually review the evidence they submit at ChargebackX. Here’s an audience question from “Getting Ready for Change: Dealing with Visa Timeline and Fee Changes” with Kimberly Singleton from Worldpay. 💬 Q: We put together strong evidence but still lose chargebacks. Sometimes it feels like no one reads what we send. How can we make sure issuers actually review our cases? A: Issuers are human too, and different issuers prefer data presented in different orders. That’s challenging to provide at scale, and it’s where AI and machine learning come into play. Some issuers want it short and concise. If you’re sending pages of documentation, they may not read it, especially if they only have three minutes to review. You could try leading with a clear summary, then follow with supporting documentation. Meanwhile, other issuers prefer lots of detail. If you’re confident in your rebuttal, don’t stop at representment. Take it further: respond to pre-arb and take it to arbitration.
