OSNR (Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio) is a critical performance metric in optical communication systems, especially in DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) networks. It indicates the quality of the optical signal by comparing the signal power to the noise power. ⸻ 🔍 Definition: OSNR = (Signal Power) / (Noise Power) Expressed in decibels (dB): OSNR (dB) = 10 × log₁₀ (P_signal / P_noise) ⸻ 📡 Where It’s Measured: • Typically measured after amplification (e.g., EDFA) at the receiver end. • Measured per channel in DWDM systems, usually within a 0.1 nm (12.5 GHz) bandwidth. ⸻ 🧠 Why OSNR Matters: • High OSNR = clean signal, low bit error rate. • Low OSNR = noisy signal, higher chance of errors and degraded service. ⸻ 📊 Typical OSNR Values: 👉🏻 10 Gbps transmission > 18–20 dB 👉🏻 100 Gbps (coherent) > 12–15 dB 👉🏻 400 Gbps (coherent) > 10–12 dB 🛠️ How Noise Is Introduced: • Amplifiers (EDFA, Raman) add ASE (Amplified Spontaneous Emission) noise. • Optical nonlinearities and fiber attenuation also degrade OSNR. 📈 Improving OSNR: • Use low-noise amplifiers • Shorten fiber spans between amplifiers • Use dispersion compensation to reduce nonlinear effects • Apply coherent detection with DSP (for advanced systems) 📉 Poor OSNR Symptoms: • Bit errors • CRC/alarm errors • DWDM channel flapping • Increased BER in FEC 📌 Visual Summary: Imagine a DWDM channel as a clean music signal. OSNR tells you how loud the music (signal) is compared to the background noise (static). The clearer the music (higher OSNR), the easier it is for the receiver to understand.

Antenova has launched Gatun, a surface-mount design for ISM Band applications, covering bands 863-870 MHz and 902 – 928 MHz, including LoRa, Sigfox, and Zigbee. Gatun (SR42I110) is part of Antenova’s lamiiANT product group, manufactured with fiberglass material, which meets automotive temperature ratings. Maintaining high-performance 72.5% (ISM 863 MHz) and 11.9% (ISM 915 MHz) on PCB, Gatun offers higher efficiency compared to older generation ISM antennas.
