Yet, most cognitive research, early detection tools, and public health narratives still default to male-centric models. (Alzheimer’s Disease International, 2015; Alzheimer’s Association, 2023) Why the gap? - Hormonal changes during menopause increase risk, particularly with the drop in estrogen’s neuroprotective effects. - Women are more likely to be caregivers, which increases chronic stress-another dementia risk factor. - Women live longer, and age is the greatest risk factor for dementia. (Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2020; National Institute on Aging, NIH) Despite this, many early detection tools like the AD8 or MoCA rely on verbal memory and observable behavior, areas where women may compensate or “mask” symptoms longer, particularly when cognitive decline shows up as emotional fatigue, executive dysfunction, or disconnection.
