Setrawa is a small desert village of around 3,000 inhabitants, 110km from Jodhpur. Located in the harsh environment of the Thar desert, inhabitants face water shortages, crop failures, debt and sickness which creates a vicious circle of poverty, disease and loss of productivity. The majority of the population is employed in agriculture or mining, and working for survival often takes priority over getting an education, especially if children have to travel great distances to reach educational facilities. The overall literacy rate is therefore very low with only 8% of females able to read and write.
The Setrawa Empowerment Centre was opened in 2007 to give the children of Setrawa access to good educational facilities, helping them to work their way out of poverty. The centre provides both an after-school programme for 60 children aged 4 to 14 years old, and a programme for uneducated children to learn basic Hindi, Maths and English as well as washing facilities for those with no access to water in their homes.

As a volunteer with the Organisation, we held educational workshop on different subjects (e.g. Health, Hygiene, and Nutrition) for the women and children of the village, to make them understand the importance of a Healthy diet, Daily dietary requirements and necessary nutrients to be included in their daily diet. Also, demonstrated basic hygiene skills like Hand washing, Clothes cleaning etc. Thus, aiding the development and elevation of the community as a whole. We also helped in conducting sewing class for the older girls to enhance their vocational skills, and played instrumental role in providing them with employment opportunities.

Hope for the Children Foundation believes in the power of education in transforming society. We believe in gently pushing back underprivileged and street children into the system of formal education by providing compassionate counseling, educational, medical and humanitarian support. These are topped with awareness programs, career guidance and educational support in the form of school kits and educational loans. A nutritious meal also goes a long way in keeping the children attentive in and beyond the classroom and we ensure this through nutritional support.

Our beneficiaries are generally children of single mothers, some of whom are HIV infected. These women are parents who struggle everyday against social stigma, financial inadequacies, unsanitary and unsafe living conditions, and constant judgment about their potential, to provide for their daughters and sons. We offer them support through medical assistance, vocational training and employment opportunities. Many of our beneficiaries are well on their way to being financially independent.

    As a CSR Member :

-Provided meals and distributed school kits and notebooks to orphaned and underprivileged children.
    -Provided education sponsorship to students.
-Supported Vocational training and computer lab centers in rural schools.
-Distributed school shoes to poor and needy children.
-Imparted skill training to women under the "Atamnirbharata Program"
