How to switch from a CA FIRM to the INDUSTRY? 🤔 I started my career in a CA firm (EY). Audit files, controls testing, vouching, reporting - it gave me a strong foundation in processes like OTC, P2P, insurance and risk. But when I moved to industry (Amazon, Decathlon and Bata) things changed completely. In firms, you audit numbers. In industry, you own them. In firms, you review what others did. In industry, you make the calls. In firms, you point out risks. In industry, you solve them. In firms, your role mostly ends with the report. In industry, the role starts with execution. That’s the biggest difference. From being an outsider giving advice -> to being an insider driving results. Both journeys are valuable. But if you want to move to industry, focus less on technical standards and more on: • Understanding business drivers • Communicating with non-finance people • Thinking about solutions, not just findings Because in industry, finance is not just about compliance. 🚨 Another Day, Another Red Flag in Corporate India Auditors don’t just sign numbers. They uncover stories. And sometimes, those stories are shocking. ⚠️ Imagine this ₹63 crore flagged as potentially fraudulent transactions… & nobody noticed until the auditors dug deeper. That’s exactly what just happened at Hindusthan National Glass & Industries Limited (HNG). 📌 BDO in India’s forensic review exposed: • ₹15.1 cr with Rafbrix International • ₹5.78 cr with Maithan Ceramic • ₹42.46 cr with Durvish Vyapaar And what did they find? ❌ Funds potentially diverted ❌ Vendors with no rationale for selection ❌ Materials bought above market prices ❌ Red flags even during physical site visits 💡 Context: HNG, once India’s largest glass container maker, is already in #insolvency. A ₹2,250 cr revival plan is on the table. But cases like these remind us that: 👉 Fraudulent trading doesn’t just bankrupt a company. 👉 It erodes trust in governance, destroys shareholder value & leaves creditors stranded. Is Section 234C an illogical levy of interest for non payment of advance tax? Let’s consider a simple scenario: a company begins operations in February and earns ₹1 crore profit by the end of March or it a business runs breakeven till January and earns profit of ₹ 1 crore in last 2 months. Under the Income Tax Act, advance tax is expected to be paid in instalments across June, September, December, and March. Section 234C imposes interest for the shortfall in these instalments. But in this case, the company didn’t even exist during the first three quarters of the financial year. Despite that, the law treats the absence of advance tax payments in June, September, and December as defaults- attracting penal interest. In the example attached, the total tax liability on ₹1 crore profit (after applying 30% tax, 7% surcharge, and 4% cess) comes to ₹33,38,400. Since the business commenced in February, the entire profit was realised in the last two months of the financial year. However, because no advance tax was paid in the earlier quarters- when the company was not operational- interest under Section 234C is still levied. The interest calculation is as follows: 15% of tax was due by 15th June → ₹5,00,760 → interest of ₹15,023 45% by 15th September → ₹15,02,280 → interest of ₹45,068 75% by 15th December → ₹25,03,800 → interest of ₹75,114 100% by 15th March → Full payment made on time → No further interest This results in a total interest of ₹1,35,205- purely for non-payment of advance tax in months where there was neither income nor any business activity. This raises a valid question: Should interest under Section 234C apply when profits are earned towards the end of the year? Should companies be penalised for not forecasting income before they even start operating? Would be interested to hear from others- have you come across similar situations? Recently, a friend told me, “I don’t need to file my ITR this year. There’s an exemption up to ₹12 lakh.” This is a common misconception, and one that could result in many people incurring unnecessary penalties. Here’s the reality: The so-called ₹12 lakh relief is not an exemption. It is a rebate that will apply only from FY 2025–26. For the current year, FY 2024–25 (AY 2025–26), the rebate is available only if your total income does not exceed ₹7 lakh. If your income crosses that limit, tax is calculated starting from ₹3 lakh onwards. More importantly, ITR filing is mandatory if your income exceeds ₹3 lakh, even if no tax is payable. Missing the due date could result in a penalty of up to ₹5,000. The deadline is just 15 days away. Don’t wait until the last moment. File your ITR, and more importantly, remind those around you who might be unaware. Sometimes, timely advice can save someone from a costly mistake. #IncomeTax #ITR #TaxFiling #Compliance #CA
