PPO Series: Part 2 What if you don't have a PPO after the internship? While deciding whether to accept or decline a PPO is crucial, only around 30% of students reach that point (the average PPO conversion rate at top B-schools). A larger 70% of students come back without an offer. I have seen various emotions in people coming out of this situation—some really disappointed (not being able to convert their dream offer), some really frustrated (performing brilliantly but there were no openings in the firm), and some extremely relieved (not force-fitting into an organization without a strong drive). Honestly, what I have observed is that all these people eventually put in their best effort during final placements and land a decent job. Many of them secure roles that are much better than what they would have received through a PPO. Things can go out of balance when you focus on and try to act upon things that are out of your control. Those who took this setback to heart found it difficult to start preparing for finals, whereas those who moved on focused on making the most of the time they had until the final placements. For those who think they did all the hard work during summers for nothing, trust me, 40-50% of your final placement discussion can be about the project you did during your summer internship. So, nothing goes wasted. Some might land a job during their summer internships, and some might have to wait until finals. The key task is to work hard and get placed. The route you take to get there hardly matters. Often times there's a tussle on how a person working in a marketing agency would bring value to a brand. Or, how a person working with a brand would adapt to the agency. 1. Working with many brands as an agency partner gives a breadth of experience. While with a single brand, it's about deep work. 2. With agency; you touch multiple categories, execute, recommend, design playbooks, make campaigns, solve for CAC, product pages, landing, creatives, so on. With brand; you own one p&l, you breathe one logo, handle budget, supply chain, pricing, positioning, launches. 3. With agency; you are exposed to tons of datasets (brands, categories, campaigns), you learn and recognize patterns, very much like machine learning. While with a brand, it's more like Gen AI. You build equity, voice, products. Every output is unique to that one brand. .... Having worked in both the places (corporate experience in agency and building Pueritia from scratch), I can confidently say - More than anything it's about the mindset. People trying to switch to a brand for better work life balance, and brand folks switching to agencies for better salaries. 7 lessons from running a digital marketing agency for the past 7 years 1. Consistency wins. It’s not about one viral idea. In digital, showing up every week, every month, every quarter gets you further than a one-hit wonder. 2. Not every client should be onboarded. If you don’t genuinely believe you can make an impact, it’s better to politely decline. The wrong fit wastes time and hurts morale. 3. If every task needs your input, you will get stuck. You can manage ten clients like that, but not more. Scaling only happens when you set up systems and empower people to decide. 4. Stay financially grounded. We’ve always stuck to fixed, sustainable founder salaries. No sudden withdrawals. That discipline kept us stable through the highs and lows. 5. Hire for attitude, not just skills. Someone who’s consistent, shows up, and follows through will go much further than a talented person who vanishes during crunch time. 6. Don’t always follow the client’s instructions. If you’ve seen what works, guide them. When your suggestion performs, they’ll trust you with the rest. 7. Outbound is exhausting. Inbound is the unlock. You need clients reaching out to you. Create content, show proof of work, build trust. That’s how the real pipeline starts. Lastly, there’s a myth that marketing work never ends. That’s usually a sign of poor planning. A good team with structure doesn’t need to burn out in chaos to be creative.
