The case study is an attempt to understand how students experience intercultural classroom commun... more The case study is an attempt to understand how students experience intercultural classroom communication and what kind of competence they need to cope in intercultural classroom communication. The context is a supplementary course in English for university enrolment in Denmark. It is a multinational student body and all the students have finished a 3-year upper-secondary school. The motive is to uncover challenges in intercultural classroom communication and to suggest tools to improve student learning outcome. The method applied is grounded theory focusing on observation of classroom communication, student questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study shows different categories of students in relation to the students' intercultural communication and awareness. Some student categories are interested in intercultural classroom communication, whereas other student categories are less interested. The outcome of the study is related to theories of student behaviour and intercultural competence. Influences on intercultural classroom communication are student agendas in relation to learning and communication. Other influences are course description and the students' language skills. The study suggests tools to improve intercultural classroom communication. In the intercultural classroom, teachers can act as mediators across cultures and students can act as initiators of intercultural communication.

As a consequence of accelerating globalisation there has been an emphasis on developing internati... more As a consequence of accelerating globalisation there has been an emphasis on developing international students' proficiency to communicate in a foreign language. However, willingness to communicate in a foreign language other than English is an issue less discussed. This case study is an attempt to clarify expats' experience of living in Denmark and their willingness to communicate in Danish. The participants include representatives of different nationalities temporarily living as expats studying and/or working in Denmark. The findings suggest that expats' willingness to communicate in Danish is highly influenced by their position in society, level of socialization with the Danes and knowledge of English. Voksende globalisering har medført en stigende interesse for at udvikle internationale studerendes evne til at kommunikere på et fremmedsprog. Der har imidlertid vaeret mindre fokus på viljen til at kommunikere på et andet fremmedsprog end engelsk. Dette case studium er et forsøg på at afdaekke udlaendinges oplevelse af at bo i Danmark samt af deres vilje til at kommunikere på dansk. Deltagerne i studiet er udlaendinge betegnet som expats, der midlertidigt arbejder og/eller studerer i Danmark. Resultatet viser, at viljen til at kommunikere på dansk påvirkes af position i samfundet, grad af socialisering med danskerne samt kendskab til engelsk.

Since the project focuses on the students’ experience, it will be empirically based and theories will be introduced when it is relevant to understand and explain phenomena and theories arising from the data.

The uncertainty in fuel cost, the ageing of most existing grid, the lack of utilities' supply cap... more The uncertainty in fuel cost, the ageing of most existing grid, the lack of utilities' supply capacity to respond to the increasing load demand, and the lack of automatically power restoration, accelerate the need to modernize the distribution network by introducing new technologies, putting the smart grid (SG) on spot. The aim of this paper is to carry out a detailed survey of the major requirements of (SG) and discuss the operational challenges arising from the integration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution networks (DN). These requirements dictate the necessity to review the energy and communication infrastructure, the automatic control, metering and monitoring systems, and highlight the features of smart protection system for a robust and efficient distribution grid. In addition, the paper aims to classify the energy storage systems (ESS) and explain their role for utilities, consumers and for environment. This includes the pumped hydro systems (PHS) and compressed air systems (CAS), battery energy storage systems (BESSs), double layer and superconductive capacitors, and electric vehicles (EVs). Since BESSs emerged as one of the most promising technology for several power applications, the paper presents an overview of their main features, management and control systems and operational modes. A survey about the utilization of BESSs in power system is presented.

However, willingness to communicate in a foreign language other than English is an issue less discussed. This exploratory small-scale case study is an attempt to clarify expats’ experience of living in Denmark and their willingness to communicate in Danish. The participants include representatives of different nationalities temporarily living as expats studying and/or working in Denmark. The findings suggest that expats’ willingness to communicate in Danish are highly influenced by their position in society, level of socialization with the Danes and knowledge of English.

This study focuses on willingness to communicate in a foreign language other than English in natu... more This study focuses on willingness to communicate in a foreign language other than English in naturalistic settings. It is an attempt to look for trends in expat experience as to intercultural communication and foreign language learning. The research questions are: How do expats experience their sojourn abroad? Which techniques do they use to cope in a foreign country? What is their attitude to communicate in a foreign language? The study was carried out in Bavaria, Germany, and it is situated within the wider context of living abroad, second language learning and using English as a Lingua Franca. It is grounded in the assumption that the approach to sojourn abroad is linked to each individual expat. For this reason data are grounded in how expats voice their experience abroad. The methodology applied is grounded theory including a mixed method approach. The questionnaire was distributed online, SurveyMonkey. The following groups were addressed: expats working and/or studying in Germany in April 2016. The findings show that using English as a Lingua Franca influences expats’ German language communication. However, the expat situation in terms of total immersion strongly enhances expat willingness to communicate in German dependent on age, gender, nationality, education, language skills and position.
