Paul is a card game researcher and player with a focus on traditional European games, especially those from Britain, France, Germany and Austria. He is a member of the International Playing-Card Society and has written several articles for The Playing-Card and, in 2024, presented a paper on the origins of Austria's national game of Schnapsen to the IPCS in Vienna.

Paul has an MA in Engineering from Cambridge University and a BA and post-graduate certificate in Theology from Durham University.

Austria's national card game, Schnapsen, is considered one of the best two-handers in the world a... more Austria's national card game, Schnapsen, is considered one of the best two-handers in the world and has long been assumed to be descended from the German game of Sixty-Six. However, as a result of new research, this paper suggests that an origin in the 200-year-old Saxon game of Schnorpsen is more likely, since Saxony was allied with Austria during the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, just a few years before Schnapsen burst onto the scene in Vienna. Using a new technique it compares the rules of Schnapsen, Sixty-Six and their ancestor, Mariage, and also reveals the earliest known rules for Austrian Schnapsen.
