We released a new study this week, which has been featured in outlets ranging from Forbes to #TheConversation! 🗞️ “Our results show that EU residents don’t default to blunt and one-sided policies —like blanket opposition to irregular migrants ever being awarded legal status. (…) the public has more nuanced views on how migration should be managed than policymakers generally give them credit for”, explains Martin Ruhs, co-author of the publication. ➡️ The findings indicate that EU residents are more supportive of policies that offer irregular migrants pathways to legal status, and that well-crafted policies can secure both public acceptance and the protection of #FundamentalRights. 💡 This study was conducted in collaboration with colleagues from Uppsala University as part of #PRIMEprojectEU. Scopri U-LEAD 📌 https://lnkd.in/d_yfx8wp

💡 Do migration communication campaigns really work? Today, participants of the #MPCSummerSchool are pitching the campaigns they’ve developed in groups over the past two weeks, and putting their ideas to the test. Through this exercise, they’ve had to: ✅ Identify a leading entity and potential partners ✅ Define a clear target audience ✅ Craft a compelling key message ✅ Choose the right format and communication channels ✅ Develop a realistic budget ✅ Navigate real-world dilemmas in campaign implementation The topics they tackled are as diverse and global as they are timely: from promoting the #labour inclusion of single mothers in #Italy, to encouraging safe and regular migration from #Colombia to Germany. Other campaigns focused on empowering migrants from #Uganda to verify recruitment agencies and report abuse, as well as showcasing Kenyan tech talent and preparing them for a digital future in #Germany. P.S. We're curious to hear which proposal our judges — Ranya Trabelsi, Monica Namanya, Darya Podolskaya, and Matthias Nikolaus Mayer — recognise as the most impactful.

#Migration policies affect thousands of people, but do they truly reflect why people migrate? 👉We're conducting a new study to explore how policymakers’ assumptions shape migration #governance. We look for policy actors and practitioners working on migration-related issues in #Europe or #Africa. We’ll compare the insights with the decision-making processes of potential migrants themselves—to provide a much-needed reality check on one of the most debated and politically sensitive issues of our time. 🔍 Want to take part or learn more? loom.ly/Gp4z2qw Go to the survey: https://lnkd.in/dr3wMYqm 🔴Deadline to participate: 30 June 2025.

Who should cook in ethnic restaurants? Are #MigrantWorkers needed to "do the jobs that locals won’t do", or are they simply a more exploitable labour force? ➡️ This morning, Martin Ruhs led a thought-provoking discussion on a central tension in national labour #ImmigrationPolicy: the challenge of globalising labour markets while protecting local workers. 🔊 "The demand for migrant labour arises from a broad range of public policies and institutions that go beyond immigration policy, so the debate needs to include wider public policy issues including labour market policies, social policies etc." There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to #LabourShortages, and the complexity of managing immigration and workforce needs often goes beyond what governments can fully grasp or coordinate. 🔄 👉 If you're interested in understanding the competing objectives and policy dilemmas in migration governance, apply to the Effective Migration Governance training, taking place 6–8 October 2025 in Florence. 🔹 Early-bird discount (10%) available until 5 July! https://lnkd.in/dxbNMsNG #MPCSummerSchool School of Transnational Governance

At what point can we say that we have free movement of people? What elements are needed to ensure it? Is free #movement feasible, and for which groups? 🌍 This morning, we turned the spotlight on #WestAfrica — a region where human mobility has historically been an integral part of people's livelihoods. Mary B Setrana, Director of the Centre for Migration Studies - UG at the University of Ghana, provided an overview of the current state of the #FreeMovement protocol in the region. She also discussed challenges and explored how national public institutions should be supported in fulfilling their responsibilities. "Some countries, continue to require work permits for citizens of other Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission) despite agreements promoting free movement across borders. Many countries maintain reservations due to national #security concerns, fears of #economic instability, and a desire to protect local industries from #competition. As a result, migration policies in West Africa remain inconsistent, challenging the implementation of #ECOWAS’s vision for a cohesive, integrated region." 🔹 We then worked in groups to discuss practical approaches for advancing sustainable free movement policies worldwide. 🎥 Check this related documentary: https://lnkd.in/dfDE3cyi Learn more about bureaucratic migration politics in West Africa: https://lnkd.in/de4Mmk4b

"I hope to gain a broader view of migration and place my work within a global context. —said Tetiana Kozak when asked about her expectations on the #MPCSummerSchool— (...) I often conduct practical, focused research aimed at policy recommendations and advocacy. However, I sometimes miss the perspectives of other groups and the latest academic developments in the field of #migration governance" At the Summer School, peer learning through group work complements our daily seminars and plenary sessions. 🤝 Participants collaborate on case studies and guided discussions, drawing directly from the day's content to deepen their understanding.
