🌍 The UNESCO-TWAS workshop, called "Science-based Solutions for Climate Action in Africa" kicked off yesterday, 28 October, bringing together 14 speakers and 30 participants. They have assembled to strengthen their skills to address climate-related challenges through interactive sessions and collaborative learning. Among the participants at the event in Ethiopia are 10 African women scientists who have long been engaged in climate research, supported by TWAS-The Elsevier Foundation Project Grants for Gender Equity and Climate Action; 10 PhD students who benefit from a TWAS-Sida PhD Scholarship for Climate Research for Students from Least Developed Countries; and 10 early-career professionals from Addis Ababa—some from non-scientific background—who have the opportunity to learn within a scientific context and enrich discussions by sharing their personal experiences. The workshop is supported by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation and The Elsevier Foundation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/d9-r7frT

TWAS - The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries – works to advance sustainable development through research, education, policy and diplomacy. The Academy was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, under the leadership of Abdus Salam, the Pakistani physicist and Nobel Prize winner. Today, UNESCO-TWAS has approximately 1,400 elected Fellows from more than 90 countries; 11 of them are Nobel laureates. Through more than three decades, TWAS mission has remained consistent: • Recognize, support and promote excellence in scientific research in the developing world; • Respond to the needs of young scientists in countries that are lagging in science and technology; • Promote South-South and South-North cooperation in science, technology and innovation; • Encourage scientific research and sharing of experiences in solving major problems facing developing countries. TWAS, based in Trieste, Italy, receives core funding from the Government of Italy. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) administers TWAS funds and personnel.

🇰🇪It’s a wrap! The 2025 TWAS Skill Building Workshop in Nairobi has come to a close, but the ideas, lessons learned, and the new partnerships and friendships formed will stay with us for a long time! 🎙️“It was an incredible opportunity to enhance my scientific skills and connect with like-minded researchers from across the continent. The session on responsible AI was particularly enlightening, and I look forward to applying the insights I gained to my own research," said abdirahman elmi, a participant in the workshop. 🌍 He was one of 28 early-career scientists from across Africa, all supported by the Seed Grant for New African Principal Investigators (SG-NAPI) Programme, with generous backing from Germany’s Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMFTR). We look forward to seeing the future collaborations that will emerge from this experience and how they will help strengthen the scientific capacity of African countries✨
