The 5G-CRESCA project (5G Connected REplicable Services for Connected cAmpus), supported by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility program, marks a significant step forward in the development of innovative and connected digital services in the academic field through 5G technology.

The project, which involves the collaboration of Vodafone Italy, the University of Milan, MADE, the IRCCS Ca’ Granda Foundation, and the Violin Museum of Cremona, includes the implementation of a hybrid private 5G mobile network within the university campuses of the Politecnico di Milano, the Policlinico di Milano, the MADE Competence Center, and the Violin Museum.

By leveraging high-speed, low-latency 5G networks and edge computing capabilities, the project aims to innovate learning and training methods, fostering collaboration with industry to create employment, economic growth, and social benefits. Starting from the academic sector, the project seeks to extend these advantages to the broader community, improving connectivity and data management security.

RESTART has the ambitious goal of contributing to shaping the evolution of Telecommunications in Italy, restarting a sector that possesses world-class expertise and experience. It focuses on the main topics of Telecommunications science and technology, including all types of related systems and networks for both human and non-human users. For example high-capacity fixed networks, 5G/6G cellular networks, local area networks, satellite networks, the Internet, applications, and services in various sectors such as agriculture, commerce, energy, finance, industry, media, health, security, and transportation. RESTART will leverage and contribute to technologies such as distributed cloud, artificial intelligence, programmable hardware architectures, integrated optics and optical computing, optoelectronics, and sensing.

--- The call for PhD Applications is OPEN ---

The rapid growth in mobile broadband network data lead to the unprecedented speed of 4G LTE deployment. The evolution calls for sustainable capacity growth and performance improvement in the next generation of wireless systems, namely 5G. The success of 5G heavily relies on delivering satisfactory user experience at a low operational cost. In this context, research and development (R&D) is required not only for technological innovation at the device level, but also management system design for the flexibility necessary to predict and adapt to network usage. To this end, anticipation is a promising and new approach. By predicting and adapting to upcoming events at various time scales, an anticipatory-enabled 5G network dramatically improves the operation quality and efficiency in comparison to the existing systems. Deploying anticipatory networking with effective prediction of network behaviour offers a twin advantage: First, resources ranging from spectrum and power to network interfaces buffers can be managed optimally. Second, network operators can jointly plan how to share infrastructure and resources to provide service with substantially reduced expenditure.

The ACT5G project takes an inter-sector approach for anticipatory networking for 5G. The project fuses and integrates the scientific expertise of the participating academic sites with the industrial know-how of the consortium. The R&D core of ACT5G consists of models, methods, concepts, and algorithms for network anticipation and network reaction. The R&D tasks are carried out along with researcher training.

The PhD training programme of ACT5G is designed the maximize the partners' synergy, to promote career opportunities of the ACT5G Early-Stage Researchers in the European ICT arena, and thus generate new expertise and human capital for the European Research Area.

BEBA is a European H2020 project on data plane of software defined networks (SDN)

BEBA challenges a very ambitious goal: can we deploy wire-speed-reactive control/processing tasks inside the network switches, while retaining i) centralized control of their specification/operation, ii) high performance and scalability, and - crucial for real world adoption - iii) platform independency, i.e., consistency with the vendors’ need for closed platforms?
BEBA’s answer revolves around the identification of a programming abstraction in the form of eXtended Finite State Machines (XFSMs). Via platform-agnostic XFSM “programs”, operators and enterprises will deploy not only static packet forwarding/processing rules (as in current OpenFlow devices), but will be able to specify and wire-speed enforce how such rules shall dynamically adapt to the time-varying flow and traffic behavior, i.e. in reaction to packet-level events, internal statistics changes, link/queue conditions, etc.
BEBA holds the promise for future-proof, efficient, and easy to administer network devices capable to be repurposed so as to meet emerging needs. Indeed, BEBA’s approach, extended with node-level processing primitives made usable through our programming abstraction, brings about key benefits in the ability to i) “software-define” middlebox-type network functions well beyond static packet forwarding, with specific project’s attention to the monitoring and network security applications’ domains, and in the possibility to ii) address the current shortcomings revolving around the high latency and large overhead of centralized network control tasks.
