With colleagues, I'm please to share our new "Guide to AI in Schools: A Perspective to the Perplexed" https://lnkd.in/e5ArpBAi Your first instinct might "Sweet mother pickles, do we actually need another AI guidance document?" That is a sensible reaction. So, we've done two things that are different. First, our guidance is sourced almost entirely from practicing classroom educators and school leaders. We wanted to share what people who have 25 students in front of them every morning at 8am were discovering, trying, celebrating, and worrying about. (And the brilliant Julie Smith from CS Ed Research did the editorial organizing.) Second, we are adamant that we have no idea if our guidance is any good. From the introduction: A guidebook of tying knots will show you exactly how to tie the knots the correct way. A guidebook on AI in schools in 2025 can’t possibly do that because we don’t even know what the knots are, let alone how to tie them. What we can show you is how people are taking this new kind of rope and bending it around in interesting ways, some of which might prove sturdy and some of which might prove faulty. And we won’t know which is which for a long time. Humility will be an essential virtue in wrestling with AI over the next decade or longer. When educators try to incorporate new technologies, some of their initial guesses are very wrong--sometimes modestly wrong, sometimes disastrously wrong. Our guidebook is a catalog of hypotheses and experiments, some of which you may be inspired to try in your own context. Take a look, and we're happy to hear from folks about your reactions, your critiques, and what you might be eager to try and test.

Most organizations still struggle to move from AI pilots to real impact. In our new paper, “GenAI Inside: A Practical Methodology for Embedding AI Across Enterprise Workflows,” we share a practical way to do it. This work was recently presented by my wonderful research associate Muhammad Aliyu at the 2025 IEEE Artificial Intelligence x Business (AIxB) conference. We designed and tested a six-step method to embed generative AI into real institutional workflows, such as admissions, recruitment, student services, etc., with measurable ROI. A small team of master students at Carnegie Mellon University Africa collected feedback from the staff via semi-structured interviews and proceeded to automate the corresponding AI workflows using agentic tools like n8n and large language models (LLMs) via APIs. The results are clear: what used to take weeks now takes hours, with efficiency gains from 70% up to 99%. Our main insight is that real AI transformation and productivity gains come not from using chatbots alone, but from process re-design, orchestration, tool reuse, and human in the loop. You didn't miss it! Check out all the new papers on #AI and #education added to the Research Repository for our August update. Every month at the GenAI for Education Hub at Stanford University we update our Research Repository (link in the comments) with all pre-print and peer reviewed research published in the last month relevant to AI and K12 education. It's becoming a go to source for leaders who want to get beyond hype cycles, FOMO, or other noise and actually understand - "what does the research say (on AI + education)?" 📚 Across the last seven months we've grown to 645 papers in the Repository. 📈 Adding 65 new papers since our July update, we're seeing a consistent compound growth of 10-15% new papers released each month relevant to AI and K12. 🗓️ Continuing on this trajectory, we can anticipate between 1,000 and 1,200 pre-print and peer reviewed papers relevant to K12 and AI by January - our one year anniversary of the Research Repository. You can filter based on User, Age, Study Design, and other categories. You can search for specific papers or topics. And, we recognize the pool of research is starting to become quite large. Here are a few new ones to get you started that I found interesting: ⭐ Lucas Jacobsen, Ute Mertens, Dr. Thorben Jensen, and Kira Elena Weber at the University of Hamburg explored how pre-service teachers perceived and integrated feedback from three sources - AI, experts, or peers. Good news, while perception is heavily biased based on who they think provided the feedback, take-up of the feedback is actually correlated on objective quality. https://lnkd.in/gHbegA_j ⭐ Researchers at the University of Washington analyzed 140,000 educator-AI messages from a K12 AI learning platform and found almost 80% were focused on instructional practices, 76% were adapting content, 47% supported assessment, and 43% sought personalization of student instruction. A takeaway - social influences may have greater influence over AI tool accuracy than technical accuracy. Thrilled to share our latest publication! Our new article, “Assessing the Compliance of Mobile Applications with Personal Data Privacy Regulations: An Analytical Study”, explores a critical topic: data privacy in Hajj and Umrah mobile applications. As a native Madinian, this research is deeply personal. The city has seen visitors grow from 8 million in 2019 to more than 18 million in 2024, with ambitions to reach 30 million by 2030 under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This surge makes secure, compliant, and user-trusted digital services for pilgrims more important than ever. Our study is especially timely with the recent rollout of the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) in Saudi Arabia. Pilgrims’ personal data—collected and processed through these applications—now falls under stricter legal requirements, making compliance not just best practice, but a necessity. This work builds on my ongoing commitment to information security and privacy, reflected in previous contributions such as “An Internet of Secure and Private Things: A Service-Oriented Architecture” and my survey on “Solving Hajj and Umrah Challenges Using Information and Communication Technology”.
