📍 Practical Training Yesterday, more than 20 of our designers and project managers visited the construction site of a data centre campus in the province of Pavia as part of our practical training programme. The campus — which comprises four buildings currently under construction — was created with the aim of establishing a technology hub capable of generating significant economic benefits for the local area and the municipality. Experiencing the construction site first-hand and interacting directly with the teams on site is a fundamental step in strengthening technical awareness and design sensitivity. This is why we encourage our designers to undertake field training. 📍 Formazione sul campo in azione Ieri più di 20 tra i nostri progettisti e project manager hanno visitato il cantiere di un campus data center in provincia di Pavia, nell’ambito del nostro programma di formazione pratica sul campo. Il campus — che comprende quattro edifici attualmente in costruzione — nasce con l’obiettivo di creare un polo tecnologico capace di generare significativi benefici economici per il territorio e per il comune. Vivere da vicino il cantiere e confrontarsi direttamente con i team sul posto è un passaggio fondamentale per rafforzare la consapevolezza tecnica e la sensibilità progettuale. Per questo incoraggiamo la formazione sul campo da parte dei nostri progettisti.

Lombardia aims to build on these results by investing in its naturally strategic territory and designing sustainable data centers. In the not-so-distant future, Milan could join the ranks of the FLAP cities. However, the path forward must first involve the creation of a uniform regulatory framework that leaves no room for interpretation. Friday, October 17, we were invited to the Politecnico di Milano, where Alberto Caccia, Director of L22 Data Center, delivered a lectio magistralis to architecture students. Starting from their questions and curiosities, the lecture shed light on the key mechanisms that ensure the operation of digital infrastructure, through real-world examples of completed or ongoing projects. Among the many dynamics that guide today’s design, the path to the future is clear: an integrated design that combines technology and efficiency, sustainability and awareness, aesthetic quality and a strong connection to the territory. A special thanks to Techbau S.p.A. for involving us in the Honours Programme, an initiative promoted by Techbau in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano. // Venerdì 17 ottobre siamo stati invitati al Politecnico di Milano, dove Alberto Caccia, Director L22 Data Center, ha tenuto una lectio magistralis agli studenti di architettura.   Partendo dalle loro domande e curiosità, la lezione ha portato alla luce i principali meccanismi che garantiscono il funzionamento delle infrastrutture digitali, attraverso esempi concreti di progetti conclusi o ancora in corso.   Tra le varie dinamiche che oggi regolano la progettazione, la strada verso il futuro è chiara: un design integrato che unisca tecnologia ed efficienza, sostenibilità e consapevolezza, qualità estetica e relazione con il territorio.   Un ringraziamento particolare a Techbau S.p.A. per averci coinvolti all’interno dell'Honours Programme, l'iniziativa promossa da Techbau in collaborazione con il Politecnico di Milano.

When a project harmonizes with its surroundings, a data center can become more than infrastructure — it can serve as a flagship location. That’s the case with this headquarter, where architectural vision merges with technological efficiency to create a high-performance hub defined by both aesthetic and functional quality. A large photovoltaic timber canopy wraps around the entire facility, bringing data halls and offices together under a single, shared architectural gesture. This unifying roof structure serves three key purposes: it offers sheltered connectivity between buildings, integrates photovoltaic systems into the envelope, and screens the rooftop equipment from view. Far from being a purely functional element, the canopy connects and enhances the different volumes both visually and physically. It also shapes a network of protected walkways that reinforce the identity and design coherence of the site. Beneath it, a multi-purpose stepped foyer leads into the lunch area and its terrace — open and accessible to everyone working at the data center. This headquarter breathes new life into a once-neglected industrial site on the edge of the city, just a few steps from the urban core — a transformation made possible through a thoughtful and future-facing masterplan. // Quando il progetto presenta soluzioni di armonizzazione con il contesto, un data center può anche fungere da sede di rappresentanza. Così avviene in questo headquarter, dove il pensiero architettonico integra l’efficienza tecnologica per dare vita a un hub performante e, allo stesso tempo, di grande qualità estetica e funzionale. Un’ampia canopy in legno fotovoltaica riveste l’intero data center, riunendo data hall e uffici sotto uno stesso spazio collettivo. La copertura unifica il fronte direzionale, assolvendo tre funzioni: garantisce la connessione coperta tra gli edifici, integra in copertura gli impianti fotovoltaici e scherma la vista da quelli presenti sopra i data center. Questo elemento architettonico non solo collega visi­vamente e funzionalmente i diversi volumi, ma definisce una rete di camminamenti riparati che raffor­zano l’identità e la coerenza formale del comparto. Nel foyer sotto la copertura, la gradonata polifunzionale conduce fino all’area lunch e alla sua terrazza, accessibili a tutti gli operatori del data center. Un headquarter che ridona vita a una periferia urbana a pochi passi dal centro cittadino, attraverso un masterplan che riqualifica un’ex area industriale ormai dismessa. 

Today, in Rome, will be held the new edition of the Data Center Symposium, an event organised by IDA - Italian Datacenter Association and aimed at the entire Italian data center ecosystem. It will be a valuable opportunity for the entire supply chain, from operators to stakeholders, to discuss authorisation issues with the authorities, including regulations, investments and training. Lombardini22 will be there, together with Alberto Caccia, Federica Quartieri, Paride Falcetti and #PaoloSarzi, to contribute to the debate on how to design, build and manage digital infrastructures that are increasingly sustainable, efficient and future-proof. One morning, 150 people, 11 speakers. On September 26th, the second edition of A Walk in the Cloud took place - an event that Lombardini22 dedicates to its professionals to engage them in the present and future of the data center world. The event brought together our architects, engineers, design managers, and project managers, along with clients and developers. It was a shared moment to exchange perspectives on the latest market trends, all through an Integrated by design lens.
