We’re thrilled to introduce NayiChaal, a research-to-action initiative that reimagines how cities move, feel, and adapt. What began as a research-led response under the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s #TMFSustainableCitiesChallenge in partnership with Challenge Works (Nesta) and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities has evolved into a collective experiment, one where data meets design, and technology listens to people. At its core, NayiChaal is a question: Can a city learn from its own movement? Can streets become systems of empathy, not just efficiency? Through our work in Varanasi, one of the world’s most complex and spiritual urban networks, we are exploring phygital solutions that combine on-ground intelligence with AI-driven analytics. From wayfinding systems and adaptive signage to mobility dashboards and accessibility mapping, our goal is to make the urban experience safer, more intuitive, and deeply human. This journey has been shaped by a multidisciplinary team that believes cities are not problems to be solved, but patterns to be understood. It’s where research becomes rhythm, data becomes dialogue, and innovation begins at the street level. Here’s to designing cities that can move and care differently. Here’s to NayiChaal. A New Step for an Ancient City NayiChaal: Where Tradition Meets Technology Every city has a rhythm. In Varanasi, that rhythm is sacred. It flows, stops, and swells with ritual, faith, and the pulse of humanity. Nayi Chaal began with a simple question, what if we could understand that rhythm, not through traffic or planning manuals, but through data that listens? We’re not here to make Varanasi ‘smart’. We’re here to make it sensitive, to flows, to people, to accessibility. From crowd heatmaps to tactile paths, from AI-assisted dashboards to physical signages, our approach blends digital logic with human intuition. As finalists of the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s #SustainableCitiesChallenge, we’re learning that mobility in sacred cities isn’t just movement, it’s meaning. This is our journey to map that meaning. Earlier this year, we launched the HEAL Project — a program dedicated to strengthening the link between mobility and access to healthcare in the Philippines. Through HEAL, we’re making healthcare more accessible by: 🚐 Deploying mobile clinics equipped with essential diagnostic and lab services to reach underserved communities 🚌 Providing shuttle services to support PGH healthcare workers during late-night and early-morning shifts Since launching the shuttle service, we’ve received positive feedback from users who shared how it has reduced their travel time and made their journeys safer — helping them arrive at work rested and ready to care for patients. This October, we’re continuing our daily shuttle service to ensure our hospital staff can keep traveling safely and comfortably as they care for others around the clock. Stay tuned for more updates! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e8rArYM3 Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines, Inc.

At the 2025 International Mayors Forum, we presented how advanced AI and real-time data are being used to address Bangkok’s traffic challenges. Through the #TRUST Project—a multi-sector collaboration leveraging vehicle probe data, CCTV footage, and AI analytics—we are pinpointing high-risk zones and developing targeted measures to improve road safety. This collaborative effort is a vital step toward safer streets in Bangkok and a scalable model for cities worldwide.
