About us

The African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) is Africas intergovernmental standards body formed by OAU (currently AU) and UNECA in 1977 in Accra Ghana. The fundamental mandate of ARSO is to develop tools for standards development, standards harmonization and implementation of these systems to enhance Africa’s internal trading capacity, increased Africas product and service competitiveness globally, and uplift of the welfare of African consumers as well as standardization forum for future prospects in international trade referencing. While increased trade and closer economic cooperation between developing countries represent a considerable potential for development, realising this potential represents a major challenge especially in terms of an effective continental standardization infrastructure. This forms the basis for ARSO Strategic Direction as summarised in its Vision, Mission and Goals. In carrying out its mandate, ARSO seeks to: harmonise national and/or sub-regional standards as African Standards and issue necessary recommendations to member bodies for this purpose; initiate and co-ordinate the development of African Standards (ARS) with references to products which are of peculiar interest to Africa; encourage and facilitate adoption of international standards by member bodies; promote and facilitate exchange of experts, information and co-operation in training of personnel in standardisation activities; co-ordinate the views of its members at the ISO, IEC, OIML, Codex and other international Organisations concerned with Standardisation activities. create appropriate bodies in addition to the organs of the organisation for the purposes of fulfilling its objectives.

Some time has passed since our week together at the ISO - International Organization for Standardization Annual Meeting in Kigal, yet the inspiration and energy from that time remain vivid in my mind. Our gathering in Africa was truly meaningful, a week when our global community came together as one, sharing ideas, experiences, and hopes for a more inclusive and sustainable future through standards. It reminded us of the strength of unity and the value of listening to one another across borders. My heartfelt thanks to the Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) for their warm hospitality and exceptional organization. Your dedication made this gathering truly special. I trust many of you have also celebrated World Standards Day in your own countries, each in your unique and meaningful ways. These moments remind us that standards are not just technical documents; they are bridges that connect people, ideas, and progress. The African Organisation for Standardisation - ARSO was a key participant at the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA) 2025 Annual Meeting held in Addis Ababa from October 14th - 16th, 2025. Representatives from 17 ACEA members convened to discuss the critical role of harmonised standards in accelerating Africa's transition from a linear to a circular economy. We were pleased by the positive reception and appreciation of ARSO's contribution, particularly the publication of ARS 1721:2025, rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate) in June 2025. This standard is a vital step in formalizing recycling practices across the continent. African Circular Economy Alliance also expressed a strong need for expansion of standards scope and cooperation mechanisms for funding standards harmonisation and implementation activities for the green and circular economy. The harmonized #Good_Research_Management_Practice_standards #GRMP have been officially launched! I’m honored to have been part of this remarkable initiative as a project committee member over the past two years. My sincere appreciation goes to #Science_for_Africa_Foundation SFA, and African Organisation for Standardisation - ARSO for their outstanding commitment and leadership in coordinating NSBs and stakeholders across Africa, driving the development of a harmonized standard for research management that enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of research outputs throughout the continent.

In partnership with the Southern African Development Community - SADC with support from the African Development Bank Group), ARSO officially handed 14 modern laboratory equipment units to Mr. Exnobert Zulu, The Deputy High Commission of Zambia in Kenya, who received them on behalf of the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS). This initiative demonstrates the impact of strategic partnerships in advancing Quality Infrastructure across Africa. The laboratory equipment will enhance Zambia’s ability to conduct rigorous testing and quality assurance, ensuring its products, particularly fish and fisheries resources, meet both regional and international standards. This move, coupled with the SME certification drive, is expected to significantly boost intra-African under the AfCFTA framework. Hermogene N. Émile Opangault, Directeur de Cabinet du Ministre du Développement Industriel et de la Promotion du Secteur Privé (industrie MDIPSP), le Dr Hermogene N. a effectué une visite guidée des installations de l’Agence. Cette visite guidée des installations de l’Agence a permis de présenter les différentes missions de l’ACONOQ, ses réalisations et ses ambitions pour renforcer la culture de la qualité et de la normalisation au Congo.
