At the Mobile World Congress #MWCKigali2025 roundtable on artificial intelligence (AI) governance, organized by APHRC in partnership with GSMA Africa, leaders from the Pan-African Parliament, regional bodies, and civil society explored Africa’s path to ethical, inclusive, and evidence-driven AI. Key takeaways: ✅ AI is inevitable - Africa must embrace it, not resist it. ✅ PAP’s leadership ensures alignment, coherence, and mutual reinforcement across national and regional parliaments. ✅ Legislators’ role is critical in developing ethical AI laws, data protection, and frameworks for digital rights. ✅ Inclusivity matters - AI must benefit women, youth, and all African citizens. ✅ Connectivity and infrastructure are prerequisites for equitable AI adoption, including investments in fiber-optics and AI-ready infrastructure. ✅ Research and evidence guide action - APHRC’s PolicyLens AI supports data-driven policymaking, oversight, and AI governance capacity building. ✅ Collaboration is key - governments, parliaments, NGOs, and the private sector must work together to turn strategy into concrete impact. ✅ From theory to practice - motions, legislation, and concrete action plans are needed to operationalize Africa’s Continental AI Strategy. As the President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira said, "The world has spoken enough about AI’s potential. Now is the time to act. Leadership at every level, from parliaments to practitioners, must step up and deliver real change for Africa." #MWCKigali #AIGovernance #AI4Development #DSWB #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch Wellcome Trust Agnes Kiragga Anthony Mveyange Catherine Kyobutungi Tathagata Bhattacharjee Damazo Kadengye Miranda Barasa Valentine K. #IamAPHRC’s Damazo Kadengye and Nancy Kiarie joined partners in the African Health Collaborative Annual Convening and the Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Adaptation (MELA) Workshop, which took place from October 20–24 in Kigali, bringing together the University of Toronto and eight African universities to promote health transformation across the continent. APHRC, together with IOD PARC (United Kingdom), and Sydani Group (Nigeria), forms the Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Adaptation Aggregator Firm. This consortium supports the African Health Collaborative by strengthening learning and adaptive processes across its network. During the convening and workshop, #APHRC’s team engaged with partner institutions to reflect on the Collaborative’s journey, deepen relationships, and reaffirm the consortium’s role in promoting evidence-informed learning and collaboration. #APHRCResearch #HealthResearch #MonitoringAndEvaluation #WeAreAfrica
