#IamAPHRC’s Damazo Kadengye and Nancy Kiarie joined partners in the African Health Collaborative Annual Convening and the Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Adaptation (MELA) Workshop, which took place from October 20–24 in Kigali, bringing together the University of Toronto and eight African universities to promote health transformation across the continent. APHRC, together with the Institute of Development Studies, Policy and Research Consortium, IOD PARC (United Kingdom), and Sydani Group (Nigeria), forms the Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Adaptation Aggregator Firm. This consortium supports the African Health Collaborative by strengthening learning and adaptive processes across its network. During the convening and workshop, #APHRC’s team engaged with partner institutions to reflect on the Collaborative’s journey, deepen relationships, and reaffirm the consortium’s role in promoting evidence-informed learning and collaboration. #APHRCResearch #HealthResearch #MonitoringAndEvaluation #WeAreAfrica

Artificial intelligence (AI) governance took center stage at the #MWC25Kigali round-table for the Pan-African Parliament, where Agnes Kiragga of the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) delivered an insightful presentation on “The Role of Research Institutions in Promoting AI in Africa.” She highlighted the important role of research institutions in shaping an inclusive and ethical AI future for Africa, one grounded in data, evidence, and local realities. From advancing data governance and policy frameworks to developing innovations like PolicyLens AI, Dr. Kiragga stressed how research can drive digital transformation that truly serves people. She further emphasized the power of collaboration between parliaments, research institutions, the private sector, and civil society to ensure that AI is governed responsibly, equitably, and for the public good. #AIinAfrica #DigitalAfrica #MWCKigali #AIGovernance #LanguageModels #AI4Development #APHRC #DSWB #InclusionInAI #WeAreAfrica #APHRCResearch Agnes Kiragga Anthony Mveyange Catherine Kyobutungi Tathagata Bhattacharjee Damazo Kadengye Letisha Najjemba Manemik Raïssa Melissa KWENKEU Miranda Barasa Steve Cygu AKILILU ALEMU Bertrand Hugo Mbatchou Ngahane Lifafa Kange Ousmane Diop David Amadi Pauline Andeso Moctar Gningue ONANA AKOA François Anicet, PhD Briceket Fomazou Rachel Odhiambo Joyce Nakatumba-Nabende Alvin Nahabwe Christine Ger Yordanos Sintayehu Meseret Mamuye CODATA Melsew Belachew Mengst Engdaw kebede Fetlework Gubena Bezawit Belachew Tesfaye Tesema Armauer Hansen Research Institute, Wellcome Trust, Charles Lenjo

When I started the Gender Transformative Course with African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), I thought I already understood what gender equality meant. But this course made me look at it in a much deeper way. 🌍 I learned that being gender transformative means more than just including women or talking about equality — it’s about changing the systems, the language, and even the everyday practices that keep inequality in place. From how we design programs to how we communicate and advocate, every step matters. As someone working in communications and advocacy, this really hit home. The stories we tell and the messages we share have power — they can either reinforce old norms or help reshape them. This course reminded me to always choose the latter. Here’s to using our voices and platforms to help create a world that’s truly equal. 💜 #GenderEquality #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #TransformativeChange #APHRC #CommunicationsForChange #Advocacy #Empowerment

I also explored African Union(AU) human rights instruments and their role in obtaining observer status. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into various platforms and opportunities for contributing to human rights advocacy. #humanrights #violenceagainstwomenandchildren #genderismyagendacampaign #generequity
