  • EMAK at Africa E-Mobility Week 2025: Driving the Future of Mobility in Africa We are proud to share that EMAK joined forces in full force at the Africa E-Mobility Week (14-16 October 2025, Addis Ababa) and what a journey it was! 1600 km Ride & Drive EMAK members Kabisa SPIRORoam hit the road departing Kenya and riding/driving all the way to Addis. This cross-country journey wasn’t just about distance but demonstrating a working commitment to mobility, connectivity, and sustainable transport across borders. Workshop on Futures Literacy Our Executive officer Elijah oduor and treasurer Steve Onyango [Econ, CPA, CISA, MBA] engaged in a futures Literacy workshop mapping out not just what mobility is today, but what it could be. Panels on Key Themes – Interoperability: how networks, infrastructure and vehicles work seamlessly across geographies. – Carbon markets: understanding how mobility can integrate into carbon-finance mechanisms and support climate goals. – Financing EVs: unlocking capital, structuring deals and creating sustainable business models for Africa’s mobility transition. – Leap-frogging Africa: harnessing this continent’s unique opportunity to bypass traditional fossil-fuel systems and embrace zero-emission mobility from the outset. Industry Tours We visited leading e-mobility and transport-infrastructure sites gaining first-hand insight into manufacturing, supply-chain, charging-networks, fleet electrification and more. These tours reinforced what’s possible when innovation meets purpose. Why This Matters Africa is uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of mobility innovation not by simply replicating what’s been done elsewhere, but by leap-frogging legacy constraints and charting its own path. EMAK’s involvement at AEW is a signal: 1. we are actively working to shape that path. 2. Building partnerships across borders. 3. Learning and implementing in real time 4. Connecting policymakers, private-sector, financiers and local stakeholders in one ecosystem. From concept to road-ready solutions. Thank you to GIZ KenyaDeutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH for facilitation, all the participants, organisers, panellists, hosts and fellow delegates who made AEW 2025 such a vibrant forum for collaboration. We look forward to bringing back the insights, partnerships and momentum to Kenya and beyond. What’s Next for EMAK? We’ll be translating the ideas, commitments and connections from AEW into concrete action. Expect: -New pilot programmes in Kenya. -Strengthened regional collaboration. -Expanded work on policy, infrastructure, standardisation and carbon-financing for mobility. -Continued outreach and engagement across industry, government, and civil society. Together, we are shaping a future where clean, efficient, inclusive mobility powers Africa’s growth. #EMAK #AfricaEMobilityWeek #AEW2025 #SustainableMobility #EVs #Innovation #LeapfrogAfrica #CarbonMarkets #Interoperability

Exploring the Futures of E-Mobility in Africa for resilient decision-making and long-term success On Monday, I had the great pleasure of hosting a Future Literacy Lab as a pre-event to the 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮-𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 (#AEW2025) at the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 in 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮. Together with experts, stakeholders, and changemakers from across the continent, we explored possible, probable, and desirable futures for e-mobility in Africa by 2040. Building on this variety of alternative futures, participants identified key 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗺 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 they consider crucial and wish to see realized to ensure the long-term success of the e-mobility transformation across the continent. They then developed 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 to connect long-term visions and near-term actions. The lab marked the final session in a global series of workshops conducted by Z_punkt The Foresight Company, commissioned by TUMI (Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative) and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Throughout the year, these labs have taken place around the world – each dedicated to (re)imagining the future of (urban) mobility. It was a great pleasure to be part of this journey. Many thanks to Lena Katharina Plikat from TUMI for making these labs a reality, and to my colleague Pallavi Rao from Z_punkt, with whom I co-facilitated previous sessions in Bengaluru (India) and Cali (Colombia). Special thanks to all participants for contributing their expertise and deep insights into the sector. Your energy and ideas make me look forward to the future – even in times that feel increasingly uncertain and, at times, daunting. A Day in Addis, Imagining Africa’s Electric Mobility Future When I walked into the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa (UNCC-AA) on a crisp Monday morning, the air already felt electric not because of charging stations or vehicles but because of the energy of possibility. We weren’t there to debate policies or exchange presentations. We were there to time travel. As part of the Futures Literacy Lab on the Future of Electric Mobility in Africa 2040, hosted by GIZ KenyaDeutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative [TUMI] facilitated by Z_punkt The Foresight Company and made possible for me by the Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK), we were invited to do something unusual: 1. Set aside what we know. 2. Challenge what we assume. 3. And imagine what could be. In small groups, we revealed our hidden expectations about how cities might move in the future. Then, we reframed them sometimes turning them completely upside down. Soon, we found ourselves co-creating worlds where mobility wasn’t just about vehicles, but about equity, clean energy, community, and access. We explored bold “what ifs”: What if mobility systems were designed for people, not just cars? What if African cities led the world in community-powered e-mobility models? What if uncertainty became our greatest tool for innovation? By the afternoon, we weren’t just participants in a workshop. We were architects of possible futures. I left that room reminded that the future isn’t something we predict it’s something we create. And in Africa’s e-mobility journey, the seeds of that future are already being planted. Grateful to the organisers, facilitators, and brilliant minds who dared to dream bigger together. #FuturesLiteracy #StoryOfChange #UrbanMobility #EMobilityAfrica #Sustainability #Innovation #Foresight #TUMI #GIZ #AddisAbaba #MobilityTransition #Africa2040 #FutureThinking #TransportFutures

Africa e-Mobility Week • Addis Ababa Seeing EVs from multiple global brands—4-wheelers, electric buses, and commercial e-motorcycles already on the streets proves one thing: Bold policy = Rapid transformation 🇪🇹 What Ethiopia Got Right: ✅ Banned import of ICE motorcycles ✅ Only electric motorcycles can be commercially licensed ✅ High taxes on ICE cars & buses → unattractive to import ✅ Zero/low taxes on EVs & components → attractive to invest ✅ Strong push for local EV assembly & manufacturing ✅ Government leading by example with EV public transport & fleets ✅ Powered by local renewable energy → low charging cost & energy security Note: Ethiopia hasn’t fully banned ICE 4-wheelers or buses yet—but the policy direction is crystal clear. EVs are the future and a priority 🇰🇪 Why This Matters for Kenya!!! As we engage policymakers, development partners, and EV innovators this week, our goal is to learn, debate, and co-create bold strategies that unlock the same (or even greater) momentum. 🔥 Curious 💬 Ready to challenge the status quo 🤝 Open to collaboration 🚀 Determined to build Africa’s next EV success story Ethiopia is showing what’s possible. Kenya can go even further.⚡🇪🇹 🇰🇪 ✅ Brand New Zero-Mileage EV Prices in Ethiopia | EV Model | Price (USD) | Price (KES) | | -------------------------------------- | ----------- | --------- | | BYD Plus | $37,000 | 4,847,000 Ksh | | BYD Up | $27,000 | 3,537,000 Ksh | | BYD e2. | $22,000 | 2,882,000 Ksh | | Radar | $49,000 | 6,419,000 Ksh | “In Africa, the first price is just a warm-up—always negotiate… and yes, the prices I shared are BEFORE negotiating!” 😄 Ampersand Energy Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK) Zeno Josh Whale Africa E-Mobility Alliance Matthew Higgins

As my team tackles the road to Addis alongside other EV enthusiasts, I am taking a different challenge - EV travel to rural Meru County proving that EVs are not exclusive city affair. As I release this post I am past Nyeri with adequate range to get to Mutuati n back to Nanyuki. If Kenya Power is there you can do EV.
