🌍 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟳 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲! In this episode, Martin Freimüller, CEO and Co-Founder of Octavia Carbon, joins us to share how this Kenya-based startup is pioneering Direct Air Carbon Capture (DAC) technology, a breakthrough method that filters CO₂ directly from the air to help achieve #NetZero. While #DAC is among the most promising carbon sequestration solutions, it has yet to scale globally due to high costs. Octavia Carbon, supported by #FSDAfrica through Cohort 11 of the Catalyst Fund, is the only company in the Global South developing this technology and is uniquely positioned to disrupt its cost structure. Leveraging Kenya’s 𝟵𝟯% renewable energy grid and favorable volcanic geology for long-term CO₂ storage, Octavia Carbon is creating a model where climate technology drives industrialisation, jobs and sustainable growth. Please listen to how African innovation is shaping the future of #CarbonRemoval and why the world is watching. Among the leading causes of global warming and the resulting #ClimateChange is the increase in carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels in our atmosphere. The good news is that this carbon can be captured and stored in ways that prevent it from affecting the atmosphere. Nature, such as trees, grasslands and oceans, helps capture large amounts of carbon globally, but the process often takes a long time. The encouraging news is that #CO₂ can also be extracted through technology, in a process known as #DirectAirCarbonCapture (DAC). Tomorrow, we’re releasing a brand-new episode of The 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁, featuring Martin Freimüller, CEO and Co-Founder of Octavia Carbon, a pioneering Global South #DAC company that is literally capturing CO₂ from Kenya’s atmosphere and storing it securely one kilometer beneath the Earth’s crust. 🔔 Kindly set your reminder! Don’t miss this dynamic discussion on how carbon tech is empowering Africa’s sustainable future. -- #MakingFinanceWork #ClimateTech #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #ClimateFinance -- Duncan Kariuki | Diana Maranga | Fiona Mugambi | Mwangi Kagunyu | Kaara Wainaina

Deep and well-functioning capital markets are vital for economic growth, yet across sub-Saharan Africa, many remain underdeveloped. Our latest report, produced in partnership with FSD Africa, explores how securitisation can unlock new sources of funding, recycle capital and support priority sectors like MSMEs. The study highlights: The untapped potential of securitisation across African markets Key barriers to scale, including regulatory gaps and limited investor confidence Practical opportunities to mobilise capital for MSMEs, infrastructure, and sustainable development Securitisation can play a catalytic role in building deeper financial systems and supporting economic growth. We invite policymakers, regulators, investors, and financial institutions to engage with the findings and help shape the future of Africa’s capital markets. I am looking forward to joining fellow practitioners, regulators, The Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana, and industry leaders in Ghana to discuss how Africa’s financial sector can embrace the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) - IFRS S1 & S2, not just as a compliance exercise, but as a powerful tool for transparency, resilience, and capital mobilisation. Sustainability reporting is no longer about ticking boxes; it’s about telling our story, how our institutions are managing risks, seizing opportunities, and driving the transition to a more sustainable future. At FSD Africa, we are honoured to support the financial sector and regulators in building the capacity needed to implement these global standards in a way that reflects our local realities and ambitions. I look forward to the dialogue, shared insights, and collective learning that will result from this week’s session. Mary M. This piece written by Kevin Munjal and our Development Impact team at FSD Africa neatly summarises a lot of the discussion that took place at this week's IMF World Bank Annual Meetings - ie why investing in financial sector development offers great value for money for funders and is highly impactful as a mechanism for driving sustainable growth. In fact one wonders whether countries with shallow financial markets can prosper at all without gripping the issue of developing their financial markets. It's crucial for building economic resilience and for channelling resources, including in #localcurrency, to those parts of the economy that we should care about - #energy, #health, #agriculture, and so on #financialmarkets #developmentfinance #sustainability Frannie Leautier Anne-Marie Chidzero Evans Osano, DBA Kelvin Massingham Alice Chapple Melinda Bohannon Rob Rudy Greta Bull Kanini Mutooni 'Tokunboh Ishmael, CFA Jabri Ibrahim
