Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) Hosts Joint Meeting of Young Career Researchers from Kenya and Rwanda The Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) convened a landmark meeting on 13th August 2025, bringing together Young Career Researchers from Kenya and their counterparts from Rwanda. The initiative seeks to revitalize research in the region, which has for years faced persistent challenges affecting early-career scientists. During the opening session, participants openly discussed the major hurdles confronting young researchers. These included the repeated failure of grant applications, difficulties in managing grants when awarded, and the unique challenges faced by women researchers, particularly in balancing professional and personal responsibilities. The Young Career Researchers benefited from valuable insights shared by distinguished scholars with experience both in active research and in policy-making at national and international levels. Prof. Emeritus Ratemo Michieka, who graced the occasion, emphasized that this program is both timely and critical, noting that Kenya currently lacks an organized body of young researchers capable of taking advantage of the opportunities available to youth in research. Vasey Mwaja addressed the key elements that contribute to successful proposal writing, providing practical advice to improve funding outcomes. Prof. Maitho further urged the young researchers to remain responsive to current societal needs and to align their work with the priorities of various stakeholders in order to remain competitive in the research arena. This collaborative platform between Kenyan and Rwandan early-career researchers is expected to foster mentorship, capacity building, and networking, ultimately strengthening the region’s research landscape. In attendance were Prof. Robinson Musembi and Julius Mwabora. Paul Bakisimon vudiyaShania AchiengEdward Ayienda

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆? I was privileged to represent the African Population and Health Research Center on the invitation of the Kenya National Academy Of Sciences (KNAS) at the symposium "Driving Change: Transforming Transport Governance for Sustainable Development in Kenya." My talk highlighted the following key points: 1. The way we design, fund, and govern transportation systems directly impacts public health—through air quality, physical activity, injury prevention, and equitable access to essential services. 2. A health-centered transport policy prioritizes clean, safe, and inclusive mobility options that reduce chronic disease risks, promote mental well-being, and bridge health inequities. 3. By embedding health in every transport decision, we build cities that are not just connected, but healthier, more resilient, and socially just for all. I also shared the work we do in advancing in urban health at APHRC and emphasized the importance of collaborating on a transport research agenda for health—one that meaningfully conceptualizes and supports the design of healthier cities and transport systems. A key challenge that came up was the existence of numerous policies that are not translated into action. I shared the experience and approach adopted by APHRC on best practices in evidence based - policy to impact communications, and the need to be intentional, strategic, proactive to invest in evidence based advocacy and policy making through the establishment of a dedicated Policy Engagement and Communications Unit. I deeply appreciated the symposium’s inclusivity, with participation from diverse sector stakeholders, including Matatu drivers, transport engineers, the National Research Fund, and communications experts.

🌍 DRIVING CHANGE: TRANSFORMING GOVERNANCE FOR SUISTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN KENYA. 🚦 On April 24, 2025, the Heron Hotel in Nairobi became a hub of innovation and collaboration as various stakeholders in the transport industry gathered for a pivotal symposium organized by Dr. Gladys Moraa.M. Nyachieo. This event brought together representatives from key government agencies, including the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA), the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, alongside academic institutions like the University of Nairobi and Multimedia University, as well as NGOs such as the Safeway Right Way Kenya Helmet Wearing Coalition. Chaired by Prof. Emeritus Ratemo Michieka, President of KNAS, the symposium addressed critical challenges facing Kenya's transport sector, including: Accidents and Traffic Congestion: Identifying root causes and potential solutions. Road Design: Highlighting the need for pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, as many Kenyans rely on walking as their primary mode of transport. Institutional Fragmentation: Discussing the lack of coordination among agencies, which often leads to duplicated efforts and inefficiencies. This gathering underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive sustainable development in Kenya's transport sector. Together, we can pave the way for a safer, more efficient and inclusive transportation system. Dr. Gladys Moraa.M.
