We were delighted to host Obreal and Apiyo Okwiri at the NASAC Secretariat in Nairobi this week to further strengthen our partnership. Together, we look forward to: 🔹 NASAC’s active participation in the OBREAL Interregional Dialogue in Colombia this November – a vital platform for cross-regional exchange. 🔹 OBREAL’s contribution to the AMASA 2025 Conference in Morocco – reinforcing our shared commitment to advancing higher education and research. Our discussions also underscored two key priorities: 🔹 Engaging and empowering young academics to drive innovation and collaboration. 🔹 Building capacity in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to accelerate technological progress and integration into global academic networks. We value this collaboration with OBREAL as we continue working together to promote knowledge, innovation, and inclusive development across regions. #NASAC #OBREAL #HigherEducation #Research #InterregionalDialogue #ScienceDiplomacy #GlobalCooperation #Africa #LDCs #Innovation #CapacityBuilding #AcademicCollaboration #SustainableDevelopment
👉This week, Obreal with Apiyo Okwiri we had the pleasure of meeting with Jackie Kado and her team at the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) offices in Nairobi to further strengthen our collaboration. We are delighted to share that: 🔸In November, NASAC will actively participate in the OBREAL #Interregional #Dialogue in Colombia, a key space for exchange between regions. 🔸OBREAL, in turn, will contribute to the annual #AMASA Conference organised by NASAC in Morocco, reaffirming our commitment to advancing interregional cooperation in higher education and research. Beyond these events, two central themes have emerged from our discussions: 🔸The importance of engaging young academics within universities to foster innovation and cross-regional collaboration. 🔸The pressing need to build capacities in higher education and research in #Least #Developed #Countries (#LDCs) to accelerate their technological progress and integration into global academic networks. This partnership reflects our shared vision of promoting knowledge, innovation, and inclusive development across regions. #OBREAL #NASAC #HigherEducation #Research #InterregionalDialogue #ScienceDiplomacy #GlobalCooperation #Africa #LDCs #Innovation #CapacityBuilding #AcademicCollaboration #SustainableDevelopment

Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, took part in a panel discussion “Towards an STI advice platform and capacity building programmes for Africa and developing countries” during the open session of the Chief Science Advisers’ Roundtable (CSAR) at G20 South Africa in Pretoria, on 21st September 2025. PSA Prof. Sood joined Dr. Brando Okolo, Head of STI, African Union Development Agency-NEPAD; Dr Richard L.K. Glover, Regional Programme Officer, INGSA Africa Chapter; Dr. Jackie Kado, Executive Director, Network of African Science Academies; Ms. Maria Matveeva, Head of Science Department, Vyzov Foundation, and Facilitator: Prof. Thokozani Majozi (CEng, FIChemE), President and Chairperson of the Academy of Science of South Africa Council. The panel discussion revolved around the development and functioning of STI advisory mechanisms across countries and organisations. Panellists reflected on the challenges of implementation, shared capacity-building strategies, and highlighted ways to ensure inclusivity, transparency, and responsiveness in science advice. The conversation also explored institutional models and opportunities for international collaboration to strengthen STI advisory systems globally. During the exchange, Prof. Sood highlighted that India’s science advice system evolved over 75 years, institutionalised through the OPSA and PM-STIAC. He emphasised capacity development in science advice and also in deep tech startups and innovation ecosystems, industry-academia linkages, foresight, inclusivity and equitable access to knowledge. He noted challenges in interfacing science with governance but affirmed that long-term institutionalisation has deeply embedded science advice in policy processes. PSA showcased locally relevant models like RuTAG and RSVCs as adaptable for developing countries, stressing that success depends on South-South partnerships combining technical expertise with on-ground mentorship to help rural entrepreneurs and startups scale context-sensitive innovations sustainably. He underscored that international collaboration, capacity building, resource sharing, and platforms like G20-CSAR can strengthen global STI advisory systems. Dr (Mrs.) Parvinder Maini | B.
