For over a decade, Professor Benedict Oramah has led a transformation you don't just measure in metrics. Under his leadership, African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) transcended its category from institution to ecosystem, where conviction meets capital and partnerships spark transformation. Through the Trans-Africa Bond Alliance (TABA) forged between African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company), he demonstrated that African solutions are not theoretical. They are tangible and scalable. And through Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AAMFI) – The Africa Club, he proved something deeper: when Africa’s multilaterals move together, vision becomes infrastructure and cooperation becomes compounding power. And too often, help comes after the loss, when the damage is already done. But across Africa, a quiet revolution is rewriting that story. A revolution built not on aid, but on agency, changing how we finance resilience before disaster strikes. At the The World Bank and International Monetary Fund #AnnualMeetings in Washington, D.C., our Managing Director & CEO Hope Murera joined Serge EKUE, President of the Banque Quest Africaine de Developpement, at Devex #ImpactHouse to explore this new frontier in African finance. For ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company), that shift begins with inclusion. Through the #DRIVE Initiative (De-Risking, Inclusion and Value Enhancement for Pastoral Communities), we have linked insurance to credit, helping pastoralists in the Horn of Africa access savings and loans that once felt out of reach. Alongside that, ACRE Africa, extends drought coverage to millions of smallholder farmers, ensuring that a single season of drought no longer means a lifetime of debt. “Reinsurance is global. Picture this. You are a smallholder farmer in rural Zambia. Every sunrise is a prayer for rain. Every cloud a sign of hope or heartbreak. One drought doesn’t just wilt your crops. It wipes out your income, your children’s school fees and your family’s future. Insurance could be your safety net. But here’s the cruel irony: you can’t afford the premiums when you need protection most. That’s the reality for millions of Zambian farmers. Until now. Rewriting the rules of resilience. Last month, together with Mayfair Insurance Company Limited, and Chitetezo Cooperative Federation, we capacitated Climate Risk Insurance Champions across Eastern Province community leaders equipped to transform how rural households prepare for climate shocks. Through the Climate Risk Insurance Scheme, supported by DEG Impulse and implemented by ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) and partners, we introduced a model that’s both simple and revolutionary: Grain-for-Premium. Where farmers can now pay their insurance premiums with part of their harvest instead of cash. Let that sink in, the very crop they are protecting becomes the currency for protection. This changes everything: o  No cash barriers keeping vulnerable farmers uninsured o  No exclusion of women or marginalized groups o  Just practical, accessible climate protection when it matters most Climate change doesn’t wait.
