Study on the Influence of Big Data on the Education Management of Colleges and Universities in China and the Countermeasures

Abstract: At present,big data has exerted influence on every aspect of society,changing not only people’s thinking modes,working modes and lifestyles but also productivity and relations of production.It will grow into "a new petroleum,gold mine and resource",and even "a new innovation engine" in the future.Since 2012,some developed countries like the United States,the UK,France,Japan and South Korea have levelled big data as part of national strategies.In 2015,the Fifth Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of Communist Party of China advocated the strategy of big data at the national level.According to the session,the government should be allied with enterprises,universities and research institutions,and only in this way challenges that big data era brings about can afford to be tackled.Riding the waves of big data,colleges and universities are none but participants and promoters.However,Steve Jobs’ question resides in the field of education big data in China.China has unique advantages over the research on big data of colleges and universities with a rosy prospect.Management is referred to as productive force,which dwarfs any other element to some extent.The big data management has stepped into a new stage in colleges and universities.Predicting discipline and discovering value,big data enables colleges and universities to stimulate and generate new wisdom in a wiser way.The big data management of colleges and universities fundamentally differs from that in the commercial field in that the former resorts to relevance as the base so as to identify the cause and effect.Big data,cloud computing and Internet of Things can be applied to optimize the structure of school-running and improve management level,serving as a vital tool and foundation for colleges and universities to improve the efficiency and promote the transformation of their management from quantity to quality.However,there is still little research on combination of big data and education management in the academic circle.If anything,it stays on the surface without concrete empirical research.From the perspective of Philosophy of Science and Technology,Management,Pedagogy and Sociology,this paper comprehensively analyzed value and potential risks of big data education management in colleges and universities,by probing into the present situation and existing problems of big data education management for innovational countermeasures.This paper goes as follows:Firstly,it presented and studied general problems of big data.On the basic of previous research,it made an overall analysis of the value and risks of big data and innovatively proposed remodeling value of big data to productive force and production relations as well as thinking value and social value of its integrative thinking,nonlinear thinking,fault-tolerant thinking,relevant thinking,equal thinking,open thinking and growing thinking.Besides,it pointed out potential technical risks,social risks,moral risks,alienated risks and risks of data hegemony during its operation.Secondly,it systematically analyzed both positive and negative influence which big data exerts on education management in colleges and universities.Based on analysis of characteristics of education management modernization,it revealed some problems hidden in the traditional management in Chinese colleges and universities like humanity deficiency,lack of variety and individuality,insufficient feedback and high cost but low efficiency,which betray requirements of education management in colleges and universities.Big data management outweighs traditional education management in colleges and universities,in terms of personalization,timeliness,scientificity,diversity,interactivity,integrity and contingency.Big data is expected to play a significant role in management of universities and colleges in terms of data collection,management decisions,governance model,education and teaching,scientific research,and assessment and evaluation.By contrast,big data management is confronted with many challenges.Its application can result in imbalance between privacy and freedom,data hegemony,data junk,data standard and data security,bringing about negative effects on education management.Thirdly,it probed into the status quo of big data education management in colleges and universities in China.Today,it has stepped into a new phase of information technology.It is found by means of expert interviews and questionnaires that achievements have been made in information construction of education management in Chinese colleges and universities over the past decade.For instance,CIO system has taken its shape,financial investment has increased gradually,and education management has taken effect.However,there still exist problems such as lack of top-level designs,shortage of finance and data talents,faultiness of related laws and regulations and deficiency of sharing mechanism.Fourthly,it proposed strategies for big data education management in colleges and universities in China.In the light of the requirements of education modernization and the targets of intelligence and humanized education management,appropriate strategies suitable to current situation of Chinese colleges and universities were proposed by following the advanced experience in big data management in some universities overseas,such as the United States.It is suggested that the universities should embrace the ideal of big data education management,and adhere to student-oriented principles.It is hoped that objectives of "avoiding risks and maximizing advantages" can be achieved by strengthening the top-level design and plans,establishing the mechanisms of cooperation,sharing and evaluation,building technical staff and the like.
