About us
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) is the official and trusted source of internationally-comparable indicators, methodologies and standards for the Sustainable Development Goal on education (SDG 4) and key targets related to science (SDG 9), culture (SDG 11) and communication. We work directly with national statistical offices, line ministries and international organizations around the world to collect data while developing a wide array of methodologies and standards to produce the internationally-comparable indicators needed to track progress, especially in the field of education, at the global, regional and national levels. As a custodian agency for SDG indicators, UIS global databases are publicly available. We produce the indicators to fuel the policies and investments needed to transform lives and propel the world towards its development goals.

From 21 to 22 October 2025, in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Office for the #Caribbean, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) held a workshop on Heritage Finance Statistics for Caribbean Small Island Developing States (#SIDS) in Kingston, #Jamaica. Over two days, participants from 15 Caribbean SIDS strengthened their capacity to compile, validate, and report high-quality heritage finance statistics for national and global monitoring of SDG 11.4.1. Through targeted training and regional collaboration, the workshop supported countries in: 🔹 Improving coordination and data flow between National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and ministries of culture, ensuring a holistic approach to heritage finance data. 🔹 Enhancing national data systems to better inform policy decisions, resource allocation, and SDG 11.4.1 monitoring. 🔹 Strengthening heritage finance statistics in line with UIS international methodologies and standards to improve comparability and reliability. 🔹 Building the skills of national experts to compile, validate, and report consistent data. 🔹 Promoting peer learning and the exchange of good practices among Caribbean countries. 📊 From 23 to 24 October 2025, in Willemstad, Curaçao, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) joined the Technical Dialogue between the Regional Network of Planning Officers (RNPO) and the Advisory Group on Statistics (AGS)—a two-day exchange focused on strengthening education data systems across CARICOM. During the workshop, the UIS presented on the relevance of household surveys and population censuses for monitoring SDG 4 — highlighting practical ways that Ministries of Education and NSOs can collaborate on the design and use of survey and census data to improve the coverage, validity, and comparability of education indicators. The UIS remains committed to supporting CARICOM: Caribbean Community partners in advancing education monitoring through better data governance, analytics, and coordinated reporting for #SDG4. #CARICOM #Education #Data #Statistics Alasdair McWilliam

🌍 The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) works to strengthen the global evidence base across education, sciences, and culture. 🎓 #SDG4 data coverage rates have shown steady progress since the previous biennium in all regions, supported by the UIS’s ongoing modernization of #data collection processes, methodological work and intensified engagement with Member States and partners through its regional teams. Beyond #education, the UIS continues to strengthen #data in other areas, such as #researchanddevelopment (R&D), where data are available for 103 countries and territories, marking a 14.4% increase from the previous biennium; and in #culture, where data on the protection of cultural and natural #heritage are available for 81 countries and territories, representing a 23% increase.
