🌞 Bangladesh advances its solar energy transition for agriculture! The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, hosted the Inception Workshop of the Solar Energy for Agricultural Resilience (#SoLAR) Phase II in #Dhaka. Building on the achievements of Phase I, SoLAR Phase II aims to expand the use of solar energy across agricultural systems, moving beyond irrigation to promote socially inclusive, low-carbon, and climate-resilient livelihoods. The initiative empowers farmers, women, and youth while strengthening the energy–water–food security nexus. The launch event was followed by a moderated panel discussion on “Solarising Agriculture in Bangladesh: Opportunities and Challenges,” moderated by Dr. Alok Sikka, IWMI Representative for India & Bangladesh. The discussion brought together key stakeholders from government, development agencies, and financial institutions, including Ashok Kumar Biswas (Department of Agricultural Extension), Ashraful Alam (SREDA), Md. Abdullah Al Matin (Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), Mohammad Sarwar Hossain (BADC), and Tanuja Bhattacharjee (World Bank Group). At this year’s Cairo Water Week, FAO and partners of the Regional Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI) Programme convened a series of technical sessions on advancing water resilience across the MENA region. In one of the sessions, “Accelerating Water Reuse in MENA: Leveraging Data for National Plans and Strategies,” IWMI’s Javier Mateo-Sagasta shared how innovative tools like AI, remote sensing, and advanced analytics are transforming water reuse by: ✨ Mapping wastewater resources for both water recovery and nutrient reuse ✨ Identifying treatment plants in near real-time and at low cost ✨ Optimizing freshwater–wastewater swaps between cities and farms ✨ Monitoring irrigation water quality to safeguard health Key insights included the vast potential of AI to unlock hidden trends in national data systems, the discovery of unaccounted wastewater treatment plants across Jordan and Egypt, and the growing interest among authorities to adopt these tools for safer, more strategic reuse. IWMI's Mansi Tripathi presented at the 20th International Symposium on Waste Management, Resource Recovery and Sustainable Landfilling (Sardinia 2025)! Held from 13th to 17th October 2025 at Sardinia, Italy, the symposium brought together global experts, researchers, and practitioners dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management and circular economy practices. Organized by the IWWG - International Waste Working Group with scientific input from leading universities across Europe and Asia, it provided an inspiring space for cross-learning and innovation. She had the privilege to present IWMI's work on “Integrating Circular Economy Principles into Rural Waste Management: Feasibility of Decentralized Waste Valorization Models in India”, supported by the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Program. The dialogues around decentralized systems, community participation, and resource recovery reaffirmed the transformative potential of circular approaches in rural contexts. The four days were filled with rigorous technical sessions and interactive labs - from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae treatment of biowaste and AI-driven food waste monitoring systems to an engaging workshop on the “Zero Waste Roadmap Game,” which explored systems thinking and collaborative pathways towards zero-waste futures.
