Today, we’re proud to announce Cohort 5 of Breakthrough Energy Fellows—45 innovators across 22 companies working at the edge of science and engineering to solve climate challenges. The Fellows program exists to fill one of the hardest gaps in climate innovation: helping breakthrough ideas progress before they’re “venture-ready.” Our model combines catalytic funding, hands-on technical guidance, and world-class mentorship to help innovators move from the lab bench toward real-world application. Impact to date (program-wide): ◾ $475M+ in follow-on capital raised by Fellows alumni ◾ 175 patents filed and issued ◾ 81 pilots and demos completed ◾ 221 industry partnerships formed What’s new in Cohort 5: ◾ Companies span all five of BE’s Grand Challenges: electricity, transportation, buildings, manufacturing, and agriculture. ◾ Almost 30% of the cohort is focused on electricity/grid modernization (e.g., transmission, storage, power electronics, renewables). ◾ It’s our most global class yet with ~50% of teams based outside the U.S., including our first Fellows from Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa. This milestone marks the fifth year of the Fellows program. It’s a model that’s proven what’s possible when catalytic support is applied early, deeply, and strategically. Five years ago, we launched the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program to address one of the toughest gaps in climate innovation: helping brilliant scientists with technically bold ideas move from the lab to the market.   Since then, this community has grown into something extraordinary. With the addition of our latest cohort, we now have supported 168 Fellows across 80 companies in 19 countries. Our companies have gone on to secure $475M+ in follow-on funding, file 175 patents, complete 81 pilots/demos and form 221 commercial partnerships. These innovators are truly pushing forward the boundaries of science and engineering. Most importantly, they have shown what is possible when early-stage innovators are given the time, space, and support to thrive.   Today, we welcome Cohort 5, our newest class of Fellows. These 45 innovators across 22 companies join a global network of alumni working on solutions in manufacturing, electricity, agriculture, transportation, and buildings. Nearly half of this class is based outside the U.S., underscoring that climate innovation is a global endeavor and reflecting how far this program has evolved in just five years. Advanced Agriscience has been selected as a Breakthrough Energy Fellow. The BE Fellows program helps scientific founders bridge the gap from lab to market, supporting early-stage innovators with capital, mentorship, education, and providing access to Breakthrough Energy’s global network. This is the most global cohort to date with 45 Fellows across 20 companies, spanning all five of Breakthrough Energy’s Grand Challenges: electricity, transportation, buildings, manufacturing, and agriculture. Half the teams are based outside the U.S. and we’re proud to represent both Canada and agriculture. 👉 Learn how CERN is saving energy by optimising cooling and ventilation motors, and how CERN’s approach could become a sustainability blueprint for other industries and research facilities. Through a strategic research partnership between CERN and ABB focused on CERN’s cooling and ventilation systems, energy efficiency audits have helped identify a potential 17.4% energy saving across 800 motors. CERN’s large-scale cooling and ventilation systems offer significant opportunities for energy savings, but their scale and complexity make identifying and realising these savings challenging. In this presentation, Ankush Gulati, Global Program Lead (Energy Efficiency), Motion Services at ABB, will share insights from an R&D collaboration between CERN and ABB that identified a 17.4% energy-saving potential across 800 of the Laboratory’s cooling and ventilation motors, enough to power more than 18,000 European households. During GasTech, one of the main exhibitions of the Oil&Gas Sector that this year took place in Milan, Italy, where MAIRE had a strong presence to show how the Group is becoming more and more enabler of the energy transition, I felt a progress in the narrative around decarbonization. In the panel where I spoke, for example, I heard a sincere attention at the capability of Energy companies to attract young talents. Young people nowadays know that the world needs a different energy mix, more renewables, clean energy sources, more sustainable production processes, less emissions, less pollution, more circularity, a more responsible use of resources. Young people are more and more choosing the Company to work for, on the basis of its position and contribution on these themes. That's an other reason why the traditional Energy sector has to change: for its resilience. The Research of our Fondazione MAIRE - ETS on 14 countries in 4 continents shows, by the way, how emerging economies are taking into consideration the training of skills and competences for the energy transition very seriously, sometimes more seriously than old mature economies do. Everything is changing, even in these difficult times of International tension and conflicts.
