Integrated pathways: advancing safe and sustainable by design material innovation through collaborative wisdom.🇪🇺

À propos

Surfactant, flame retardant, and plasticizer functionalities play a critical role in various chemical value chains, enabling the production and use of numerous industrial goods and chemicals. However, many substances within these categories are classified as Substances of Concern (SoC) due to their potential health and environmental risks. To address these concerns, the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability Towards a Toxic-Free Environment advocates for minimizing the use of SoCs and developing safer, sustainable alternatives that enhance environmental protection and supply chain resilience. In response, the European Commission introduced the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, a voluntary initiative aimed at steering the development of inherently safer and greener chemicals and materials. This framework encourages companies to adhere to principles of circularity, safety, and sustainability throughout the life cycle of products, from design to end-of-life, as a way to meet regulatory requirements and remain at the forefront of ecological transitions. Despite its potential, the practical implementation of the SSbD framework remains a challenge for the industry, particularly in applications like surfactants, flame retardants, and plasticizers. For these sectors, substitutes must not only be safer but also meet or exceed the performance of existing solutions. The DESIDERATA project seeks to bridge the gap between the conceptual SSbD framework and its practical application through real industrial use cases. The project aims to create alternatives for SoCs with surfactant, plasticizer, and flame-retardant properties in diverse chemical and material industry applications. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Research and Innovation program under grant agreement N° 101178011 and from the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).
