I am glad to share that the European Commission has proposed a new legal framework that streamlines the system for collecting official statistics on European fisheries and aquaculture. By consolidating five existing legal acts into one, we are reducing the reporting burden on Member States. This initiative will enable the reuse of existing administrative data, already provided to the Commission thus allowing the production of accurate statistics without additional reporting by the national statistical authorities. For the first time, based on this framework, there will be statistics on discarded catches, recreational fisheries, sensitive species and more. The new data structure will enhance our global cooperation by enabling the production of more aggregated figures for international reporting. This is a crucial step towards informed decision-making on the sustainable use of shared marine resources.
