The Publications Office therefore plays a central role in informing the public about what the EU does and means for them, and in unlocking the power of data. We’re back from #EURegionsWeek in Brussels! The European Week of Regions and Cities celebrates every year how European cities and regions drive growth, create jobs and bring EU cohesion policy to life. This year’s event focused on regional development strategies that empower people to thrive locally and on the role of urban areas in building sustainable and inclusive futures. We were there to share how our cities and regions can prosper through #EUResearch and #OpenData, creating smarter, greener and more sustainable cities for all. A big thank you to our panelists who led a workshop on how EU open data supports the development of smart cities. The panelists were Mani Dhingra, Ph.D. (Dublin City Council), Olaf Osica (Warsaw City Council) and Carlos Ferreira (Publications Office of the European Union), all moderated by Katarina Kakalikova (Mastercard). The session highlighted how open data fosters public engagement and enables citizen-focused services. We were also there to talk with visitors about how websites such as TED, CORDIS and the European Data Portal promote fair business, innovation and sustainable growth, giving local actors across Europe access to valuable data and research-based knowledge. Thanks to our colleagues Astrid Brey, Maria Serfioti and Carlos for holding the stand! Exchanges. Connections. Information sourcing. Actions. Impact. That’s what #EURegionsWeek is all about!

Today we hosted the third AKN4EU Technical Workshop! 3️⃣ #AKN4EU (Akoma Ntoso for European Union) provides a common, machine-readable XML format that streamlines the drafting, translation and exchange of EU legal documents. It plays a key role in advancing digitalisation, legal simplification and the future European Legal Data Space. At the workshop we brought together technical coordinators and experts from several EU institutions and some of our teams. In her opening address, our Director-General Hilde Hardeman underlined the strong interinstitutional collaboration driving the success of AKN4EU, a standard that lies at the core of how EU institutions draft, exchange, and publish legislation: ‘Across the institutions, AKN4EU is a driver of digitalisation, legal and administrative simplification, and transparency, and represents a cornerstone of the EU Publications Office’s strategic objective to build a European Legal Data Space.’ ⚖️ The workshop celebrated the recent adoption of AKN4EU version 5.0, which incorporates Akoma Ntoso 3.1 and extends coverage to the Commission’s Autonomous Acts and EESC documents (documents of the European Economic and Social Committee). 👏 We also prepared the ground for version 5.1, which will further expand the standard’s interinstitutional scope. Congratulations and thanks to the many colleagues in the EU institutions for their efforts in moving this initiative forward. Thanks also to our Legislative Formats team and technical experts for their commitment and expertise in advancing this collaborative effort. 🤝 Developed under the coordination of the Interinstitutional Metadata and Formats Committee (IMFC), AKN4EU helps us work in a way that is future-proof, harnessing AI. It also underpins initiatives such as the Commission’s Acquis Management Programme. We are smiling proudly at the Publications Office of the European Union! Every year in the European Commission we hold Clear Writing Week to share tips and best practices on writing clearly in all communication. To end the week, there is a Clear Writing Awards ceremony that recognises and thanks colleagues who produce remarkably clear, understandable and accessible content in their daily work. This year, for the second time in a row, two colleagues of ours won an award! 🏆🏆 Our colleague Dominika Uhrikova won an award in the digital content category for an article in our internal newsletter Commission en direct entitled 'Delivering hope: over 1.5 million textbooks reach Ukrainian schools'. It concerned our joint project with DG EAC to deliver textbooks to schools in Ukraine. 👏 Our other colleague María J. Jerez received a prize for her work in developing an easy-to-read version of DG JUST’s public consultation on the EU Gender Equality Strategy post-2025. The consultation aimed to gather the views of different actors on how the situation of gender equality in the EU has evolved since 2020 and identify priorities for the next 5 years. Maria’s work helped facilitate the engagement and participation of young people and people with cognitive and reading disabilities in the consultation. 👏 Colleagues were presented with their awards by the Commission’s Secretary-General, Ilze Juhansone, and Director-General for Translation, Christos Ellinides. 🤝 Congratulations to Dominika and Maria! And here’s to more clear writing achievements every year … and every day! 📝 💯 #PlainLanguageDay #KISS .................................................
