Today, we celebrate 25 years of International #MotherLanguageDay – a day dedicated to linguistic diversity and the importance of preserving all languages! At the European Parliament's translation service, we know that language is more than just words – it's identity, culture and connection. To ensure accuracy and fluency, our language professionals usually translate into their mother tongue, safeguarding the richness of the EU’s 24 official languages. To mark this quarter-century celebration, we invite you behind the scenes in Luxembourg. 🎥✨ Watch this video and learn more about how our translators help keep multilingual democracy alive. #translation #IMLD2025 #multilingualism #LinguisticDiversity

Barbora shares her grandmother’s memories from World War II with us. Born of German descent in the small town of Horná Štubňa, ‘Oma’ Alžbeta was torn away from her family, together with her cousin Emília, and deported to Sudetenland when she was only 6 years old. 📖 We translate citizens' stories in all 24 official #EU languages. Today, our language professionals are inviting us to reflect on a tricky challenge: how to translate gender-neutral terms when there is no equivalent in the target language. For example, in English, we can use 'my grandchild' and be non-gender specific. But in Italian, we must specify the gender: 'mia nipote' (granddaughter) or 'mio nipote' (grandson). Our Italian language professionals found a clever workaround that captures the essence without focusing on gender: 'la prossima generazione' (the next generation). This illustrates just how creative and thoughtful the translation process can be. What do you think? Do you know other interesting solutions like this? Drop your thoughts in the comments 👇

The Multilingual Story of Enlargement 💬 On 30 and 31 of January in Luxembourg, we hosted the fourth #translation conference for colleagues in our #translation service. Entitled ‘The Multilingual Story of Enlargement’, this year’s edition gave our colleagues the opportunity to exchange views with expert speakers on how enlargements shape #multilingualism in the European Union. We were honoured to welcome our President, Roberta Metsola, to Luxembourg. Other inspiring speeches came from Commissioner Marta Kos, Vice-President Martin Hojsik, the Chair of European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs David McAllister and our Director-General Valter Mavrič. Colleagues followed engaging panel discussions with experts on the historical context of European integration and enlargements, its impact on multilingualism in the EU and the role of translation in the story of enlargement. 🔹 Former EU Commissioner for Multilingualism Leonard Orban | Andreas Wirsching | David Stulík | Prof Roderick Pace | François GRIN | Michael Cronin | Nils Ringe | Diana Prodanović Stankić | Genti Xhaxhiu | Artan Fuga | Bohdan Stasiuk | Mandana Seyfeddinipur | Véronique Rosenkranz | Mads Nyegaard Outzen | Cathy WAIBEL 🔹 It was a great opportunity to continue growing, learning, and enabling multilingualism in the EU. We wish to thank all conference speakers and everyone involved in it!

Karl’s story takes us back to Easter Monday in 1946, one year after the end of the Second World War. This was the day when Hungarian citizens with German roots were expelled from Hungary and forced to leave everything behind. They were allowed to keep only 50 kilograms of their belongings. Karl was only four years old at the time, but he still remembers fragments of his family’s journey of hardship and despair in search of a new home. Let’s read his gripping story! 👉 https://loom.ly/sbjxCS8 📖 We translate citizens' stories in all 24 official #EU languages. 📨 Share your own story 👉 https://loom.ly/isEFBpg #StoriesOfEurope #Europe #multilingualism #EasterMonday
